THE WICKED SIDE OF WIZARDRY

Cute girl wizard Lucy wants to join the Fairy Tail, a club for the most powerful wizards. But instead, her ambitions land her in the clutches of a gang of unsavory pirates led by a devious magician. Her only hope is Natsu, a strange boy she happens to meet on her travels. Natsu’s not your typical hero–he gets motion sickness, eats like a pig, and his best friend is a talking cat. With friends like this, is Lucy better off with her enemies?

I am at work. My book is in my snowed-in car. So, I actually read this online! I needed something to do to keep me entertained. I found a website that tells me which chapters fall into which volumes, so I really did read what would be considered this entire book. I was having bad luck finding the first volume in series, anyway, so this way I can read this entire series straight-through with no worries!

I have seen this series at the bookstore and thought it looked interesting. This would be me judging a book by its cover, but that is besides the point. I read the description and thought it was worth giving it a try. I have to say, with just the first volume read, I am not sure if I like it yet, or not. I really like graphic novels/mangas where an animal plays a key roll. That would be one of the reasons that I picked this book up in the first place. I was also attracted to the title. I thought it might be a play on well-known fairy tales. It isn't, but it was still interesting!

Lucy is the main female character. She is really loud, a fact that is pointed out several times throughout by other characters. Natsu is pretty funny. He has these amazing powers, but he gets on a boat and cannot keep his lunch down. It makes for some interesting situations! The cat, in many cases, has served as comic-relief. The cat is named Happy. The comics in this collection really just introduce you to the characters and the Fairy Tail club. They are about to go on a mission, though, that sounds like it is going to be rather interesting!

My concluding thought is that while I intend to read at least the next volume, I am very glad that I did not buy this book.

  1. I'm glad you're doing this manga challenge. My husband is a big fan of graphic novels, especially Japanese samurai stories like 'Lone Wolf and Cub' and 'Path of the Assassin'. In fact I started Brad on the 'Path of the Assassin' series when I bought him volume 1 for Valentine's Day a few years ago (we're just that kind of couple.)

  2. I will keep those two titles in mind, thanks Julia! I don't mind them, I just find that I read them so fast that I hate spending money on them, if that makes any sense!

  5. I've been wondering what this series is like, sounds interesting from your review and the library has 1,2 and 3 so I think I'll give them a shot.

  6. I am like three chapters away from finishing volume 2 and I think I will probably read the whole thing. I look forward to hearing your thoughts! Don't judge it by the first book, though... Not much happens.

I always judge books by their covers :) Yay for posting the first review for the challenge. I hope you enjoy book 2 better, it's cool you found it online. Talking cats always sell a book to me...

  8. Talking cats are great, huh? Online worked better for me because of my current financial situation! I find if I don't start challenges right away, I forget about them and then they never get finished!
