Book Blogger Hop - Take 1

Question: How many years have you been blogging? Anything special you want to tell everyone about your experiences?

Answer: In December I celebrate my 11th Blogging Anniversary. (I had a Live Journal before that, but I don't count it). I started blogging because an online friend got into in November. Book blogging was still a relatively new thing back then. Then, it sort of exploded. It is hard to believe what has changed in that time. I remember when I first started getting offered review copies of books. I was so excited! This was before e-readers were popular, or maybe even invented... (I was a bit slow to e-readers, so I can't remember when they launched). It was before Netgalley, Twitter, and Instagram. There was Facebook, though, but social media was just in its infancy. And, now... I find the blogging world can get kind of overwhelming. I try to stick to my quiet little corner and I don't branch out like I used to. I rarely accept review copies any more and most of my book blogging is a Sunday post where I tell what I read that week. My blog has changed a lot from the one that I started, but I like how it has changed. I still read, but I have developed many other interests that I like to talk about. And, my blogging ebbs and flows, but that's life...

How long have you been blogging? What are your thoughts on it?

The Written World Turns 8!

Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday Dear Written World
Happy Birthday to You!

It is that time again. The Written World is 8! I can't believe I have been blogging for 8 years. I sort of fluctuate in my blogging... Sometimes I blog all the time and then sometimes I don't blog very much. I still consider myself a blogger no matter how much time I find for it. I guess I am not ready to step away from the community yet. And, really, most marriages nowadays don't last 8 years. I am pretty proud that I have stuck to it this long. To many more years of rambling about books, posting pictures of Casey, and, well, rambling in general! And, to all the friendships I have made that I never would have if I hadn't started this blog. It was meant to be!

Happy 7th Blogiversary to Me!

I can't believe it... I have been blogging for 7 years! And, I am actually remembering to mention my Blogiversary. I have been a bit sporadic with that over the years...

So, I do have one tradition:
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday dear Written World,
Happy Birthday to you!

Now, what should I talk about? Twice I sort of got on a soap box about blogging and community and how people could be unfriendly. This year I have been anti-social myself. Do you ever wonder that by getting so big the community is actually dying? People don't join in things like they used to. And then there is commenting... People don't really comment on blogs. I remember when I started blogging I had a blog roll in my sidebar and it was perfectly manageable for me to go through it and see if there were new posts from each blog. Nowadays the thought of doing that hurts my head... But, part of me misses that simplicity. I didn't ignore everyone and feel overwhelmed all the time.

2012, for me, has been the year of projects. I got back in the habit of taking pictures. Yes, they are often of the cat, but I have also taken some pictures that I love and am proud of. I am hoping to take photography one step further in 2013 with my new camera and the photography courses I am signed up for. I also got back to my postcard collection. I have been collecting postcards since I was a little kid, but I hadn't been taking an active role the last few years. I made a project to collect the 50 states and I am very near completion. I also joined Postcrossing to branch out and get postcards from all over the world. To add to this experience I started a blog to show my collection off and not have it just sit around in boxes. It launched yesterday and is called The Postcard Project

In many ways I got beyond reading and that is a bit sad. It was almost always my main hobby, but other things have taken over. I still read, but I haven't got a routine that I have time for everything else and the reading, too. I think maybe I have just read so much over the years that I needed to take a step back and remember that there are other things out there to enjoy... I still plan to read. I am hoping 2013 will see a return to that, but hopefully with other projects thrown in. I hate neglecting my books, so I can't stop reading entirely.

Anyway, here's to another year of blogging, friendship, books, conversation, Twitter chats, fun mail, gifts, cards, postcards, photography, and whatever else you find to keep you entertained. One goal I had for this blog when I wrote last years Blogiversary post was a template change. I at least managed that!

It's my Blogiversary!

*ahem*

Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday dear Written World,
Happy Birthday to you!

That's right, folks. Today is my blogiversary. I have been blogging for 6 years! I always find my blogiversaries a bit scary. I think about all the time and energy I have spent blogging, visiting blogs, messing around with my template, avoiding my Google Reader, tweeting, and all the other wonderful things that come along with blogging. Not to mention all the reading I have done, recommendations I have acted on, and review copies that I have received. I can safely say that pre-blogging I had a very manageable TBR pile. I can no longer say that... It has all been so much fun, though! I am very happy that I became a Blogger.

When I wrote up my post the other day for Trish's survey I went to double-check when my blogiversary was. I am horrible at blogging at December and more often than not entirely forget to blog about the day. I actually had another post scheduled for today and hastily moved it to another. Back in 2009 I wrote a post called The Changing Face of Book Blogging. I thought since it had been 2 years since I wrote that post I would look back at some of the things that I said.

At the time I wrote the post I think the whole disclosing where a book came from scandal was going around the blogosphere. That was 2009, right? Since then it has been joined by many more issues. In 2009 I said that I hated that they even had to be there, but they are probably always going to be. I still continue to mostly stay out of things. I am not enough of a 'voice' in blogging to really weigh in most of the time anyway. I have always done my best to meet new people, but also stay on the outskirts at the same time.

The longest paragraph in 2009 is still something that I hate about blogging today. Blogging is not a popularity contest. It was always supposed to be a community. It used to be smaller, so maybe this was more manageable. Nowadays it is sometimes an online version of high school. Not surprisingly I hated high school. Sometimes I hate blogging. I was reading a post on Beauty is a Sleeping Cat and in the comments she referenced the The Book Blog Mafia. I was horrified. She is a relatively new blogger and she thinks that some of the 'older' bloggers act smug and superior. I would hate for this to be the opinion held by new bloggers. Do I think she has a point? Well, yes... And that in a nutshell is what urks me about blogging at times. Obviously her post is about something entirely different, but I got stuck on one random comment. Probably because I am an 'older' blogger and I would hate for my blog to come across as anything but a friendly place to visit.

Caroline ended her post by saying that she blogs to connect. That's why I blog! That's why 90 percent of the time I ignore the scandals. That's why I just stop reading blogs when they start bothering me. I have made some very wonderful friendships in 6 years of blogging, and the best thing of it all is, I continue to make new friends! I get so excited when I receive emails, Christmas cards, ocassional presents, etc. from the people I have met through my little blog. I even still get excited when I receive comments. I love comments!

So, ladies and gents, thank you for 6 years of blog visits. Thank you for the comments, the emails, and the chats on Twitter. Thanks for the books and the recommendations. I really do hope that even with a few hitches along the way, we can continue to be a large community that is continuously welcoming to new bloggers and visitors. This is an experience that I wouldn't honestly trade for anything and other people deserve the right to enjoy it. Here's to many more years of blogging at this little blog...
On an entirely different note, I think 2012 is going to have to bring a template change. I have been using the same one for years and only had one other before that, so.... Look forward to that! Once I find someone techno enough to do said template change. Any volunteers?

The Changing Face of Book Blogging

In a few days I will have been blogging for 4 years! It is really hard to believe. I was supposedly doing my blog reading either, though, and I got to thinking about how blogging is a lot different now than it was four years ago. For starters, there are a lot more bloggers now than there were when I started! I just read the blogs in my blog roll on my sidebar. I didn't need fancy programs to keep up with everything. Now, I could probably read about twice the amount of blogs that I do now and would still not visit everyone. I am going through a period now where I am marking all as read more than doing any blog reading. It's a bit sad, really.

Then, there are the bloggers that don't blog anymore. It's sad.

When I started blogging there were really no review copies of books. Now, there is a feature called Mailbox Monday and I see people receive like 20 books in the mail and a lot of them are review copies. I remember how excited I was when publishing companies started contacting me to review for them. I still very rarely contact them. (Although, I did contact Penguin Canada, but that was an exception!) Reviewing books is a nice aspect of book blogging. I read a lot and my finances are not really of the type where I can afford to buy everything I read... So, it has helped me a great deal! This year I re-added the library to the mix, too. Review copies of books are a lot of fun, though. I get so excited when I get books in the mail. It is like Christmas!

It does bother me when new blogs either start up just to receive review books or they have been blogging for about a month and expect large quantities of review books. I honestly think reviewing books should be earned. That is my personal opinion, though.

On the review copy theme, there are now things like Blog Tours and companies that set up blogging tours. That is a very new thing. I do admit that sometimes I find Blog Tours tedious. I don't mind if it is spread out over a month, but one book being reviewed on several blogs all on the same day drives me crazy! If it is spread out over a period of time I will read the various reviews, but if you slam me with same review over and over again on one day I can pretty much guarantee that I stop reading after a while! There are exceptions. There is new thing called the Classics Circuit (I don't have the URL handy) and I think it is so cool! I mean, blog tours for dead authors is a fun idea, really.

Another thing that brings to mind is Reading Challenges. I remember when there were only a couple reading challenges. I remember me and my blogging friends at the time having unofficial ones every so often and Carl's challenges have been around as long as I have, but now, now it is just insane! I join them, yes, but I am starting to get a bit afraid of them. There are so many it is a bit over-whelming. I join too many, but there are still so many I could join... Just as scary is the amount that some of you join. I think I have too many, but I am small potatoes compared to other people!

All this really is leading up to me hating the fact that blogging is not always fun. There have been big... debates... this year about various issues. I feel like an outsider because I really don't care and very rarely say things, but I do hate that the issues have to be there. I think I will leave it at that. The last thing I want to do is stir up trouble.

Part of me really hates the fact that blogging sometimes seems like a popularity contest. I despise the Followers function on Blogger, for example. I love that people read my blog, don't get me wrong, but I don't feel the need to broadcast to everyone how many people read my blog. It's just not my thing. I also don't check blog stats or freak out about the amount of comments that I receive. The charming comedian is often telling me I am very laid back, and I guess I take that approach to blogging. That does not mean that I am oblivious, though. Just because I am quiet does not mean I am not paying attention! Sometimes I do get sad when my commenting is down, but not enough that I really seem to do much about it... That is just me hoping that I am not blogging for myself. That gets a bit dull!

I could go on and on. I notice a lot of changes in just the last year; let alone the last four! And, I was trying not to insult anyone. I hope I accomplished that! This is mainly just observations on things. I do know for sure that I am very grateful to everyone that reads my blog and I am happy to have met all the wonderful people I have met through book blogging. Thanks for making book blogging a mostly fantastic experience! I am going to shut up and go read now...

Happy Anniversary to Me!

Today is my 2nd anniversary of this blog! Hard to believe I have been doing this for two years, but there you have it! I have made a lot wonderful friends along the way, so I have greatly enjoyed the experience. I almost missed the anniversary, I just happened to think of it a moment ago, so happy anniversary to me! I had planned to do something special, but I sort of lost track of time.

Happy Anniversary!

So, today is the day. The Written World turns a year old today! I hope that people have enjoyed reading my posts over the last year! It is hard to believe it has been a year already, where does time go. Just looking back on my blog, lots of things have happened in just the short period I have had this blog. I have met new people, read new blogs, it actually could very well feel like it has been more than a year! To many more posts, new friends, and new blog experiences! Cheers!
