Nightingales Lament by Simon Green

In the Nightside, the hidden heart of London where it's always 3 AM, Detective John Taylor must find an elusive singer known as The Nightingale. Her silken voice has inexplicably lured many a fan to suicide--and Taylor is determined to stop her, before the whole neighborhood falls under her trance. But to catch the swift-winged Nightingale, he'll have to hear the deadly music--and survive.
This is the third book in Simon Green's Nightside series. I first read Green last year for the R.I.P. II Challenge hosted by Carl and found that I quite liked his writing style. It reminds me of a bunch of different series that I have read before, but somehow I find myself liking this series better than the others. So much so that I am trying to track down book four, but where it is an older series I will likely have to order online and I am trying not to do that because I spend too much money when I do that!

So, on to the book. This series is about Detective John Taylor. He is an interesting character. He has a third eye that makes him capable of finding things. So, that understandably makes him a good detective. The only problem is he has a lot of enemies and when he uses his third eye it makes it easier for them to hunt him down. This means he has the power but not it is too risky to use it all that often which means that he also has to act like a regular human being in his profession. In this book he is hunting down a singer who has alienated herself from her family and friends. Her father is worried about her and wants Taylor to check into things and make sure that his daughter is alright. This leads the reader on an interesting journey. All the characters in this series are not what they first may seem, so it means that you never really know what is going to happen next!

Another enjoyable entry in this series. Hopefully soon I will be able to read the next one and not wait a year!

(As to Breaking Dawn... pfft... I am really not surprised about the direction this book is going! Does that mean I like it? Nope. Just doesn't overly surprise me.)

  1. I cannot believe how long this book has sat on my shelf unread! It is incredible. And this one has such an incredible cover. What am I thinking? Perhaps for this year's R.I.P. Challenge?!?!

I'm glad you are enjoying these. I certainly don't mind trying to track these down for you on the cheap over here. I was so annoyed to see that his 5th or 6th book in the series...maybe 7th, I don't know...came out in hardback. After all these paperbacks? I am fan of the hardback, but that is ridiculous. These are the kind of books I would much rather snag in paperback anyway.

  2. Oh, that would be great, Carl! Anything that keeps me off Amazon is a good thing, anyways. haha. My car is sick and I want to get new glasses, so I should stay away from the bookstore until I meet those requirements. It really is a great series. And, that is a great cover. The book I read had a different cover, I have the 3-in-1 edition. I hope you do read it for the R.I.P. challenge. And I saw the hardcover thing. I really am not a huge fan of authors doing that. I mean, it is good for them because it means they have reached that level of popularity, but I like to have my books match and things... Means a longer wait or I just give up on the matching and buy whatever.

  3. What is weird is that Simon Green has had several other books published in hardback before. He is an established author. Which is weird that this series started out in paperback and then went the hardback route. Weird? Did I say that...it isn't weird, it is all about publishers making money! ;)

Do you have any feelings one way or the other about the books being used, their condition, etc.? Are you wanting to find collectible and keep copies or read and pass on copies?

  4. Yeah. It was late in the series when the books went the hardcover route. I don't know what the thought process behind things are to be honest. I suppose whatever makes more money!

As to the books, all I care about is a book is readable. I checked the second-hand bookstore here but they didn't have any of his books. I am never picky, though. I generally hold on to series because I like having the collection, but that's the extent of my criteria.

  5. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed this installment of the series so much! I've read the first two books so this one is next for me. And Green does seem to get some pretty rockin' covers for this series. :)
