Maybe Too Much Info, but...

Don't you hate it when you buy a new scented product, put it on, and your eyes start watering! Guess I am allergic... Fun stuff! I don't wear a lot of scents for this very reason, to be honest.

Like perfume, never going to happen! And, the charming comedian, I have him using some very low-key deodorant because I was allergic to him in the beginning. I had a cold when we first started hanging out, so I was stuffed up and coughing from that, and then my eyes were watering because of the crap he was wearing. It was terrible!

So, what are your thoughts on scented products? (Hairspray is the worst. My mother wears hairspray and I just about die going near her! I can't handle the perfume/make-up counter at most stores, and I am always trying to figure out how they can have that section when you first walk into the store! My eyes are watering before I even get anywhere!)

  1. I have no allergies myself, but I can imagine how annoying that must be for people who do!

I... think most people go overboard with the scented products. I can't stand hairspray, aftershave and a heavy whallop of perfume. (Unless perfume is supposed to smell like you've used up half the bottle.) They make me dizzy and/or headachey.

So you're definitely not the only one who can't stand them!

  3. I have the worst allergies. Almost all scented products--deodorant, soap, lotions, perfume--I'm sensitive too. It makes it difficult to be around people at times. Because even though they *know* that it bothers you, they still wear them.

  4. My aunt and husband get migraines, so I'm always careful about what I spray around them. I'm not really all that girly, but I do have some perfume that I'll maybe spritz once. Just enough to smell good, but not bathe in it like some women! That I cannot tolerate and I wish they would have more respect for other people's noses!

  5. Nymeth: I never used to have allergies, but the older I get, the more I am bothered by.

lib: I hear you! People overload. I know that it is worse when you see someone right after they have put it on because it is so over-powering! I have had plenty of conversations that I just wanted to end because of the smell!

Becky: My boyfriend has the worst allergies, too. He is allergic to like everything, so I know what it is like, even if I am not living it! I have to be careful about everything and like the nice person that I am, I have even switched my laundry detergent and things to scentless.

Amy: I am not all that girlie either. Perfume would just make me sick anyway, so I never wear it! I try to stick with stuff that doesn't smell too bad. The stuff that started this whole conversation was a Christmas stocking stuffer that went sailing into the garbage because the bf is allergic to it too! He coughed so bad he couldn't breath or talk. It was bad!

  6. I am allergic to alot of scented products as well. I hate it when products I use change their scents and I can't find one I can use. I have to be especially careful with the scents of shampoo before I buy it.

  7. I work at a public pool the smell of chlorine is burned in to my nose. To me everything has the slight smell of bleach. :)

  8. I just stick with the same few types of shampoo. Some of that stuff smells so bad, though! I hate it when they change their labels or the names, though. I know my kind is there somewhere, but I don't know what it is called anymore. I have no idea what they serve by doing that, but all it does is annoy me!

  9. Krissi: I hate the smell of chlorine. It is torturous on my eyes! And bleach is probably the worst smell on the planet.

  10. I cannot take the smell of perfumes or colognes at all! I get so sick to my stomach! Seriously, there have been times in stores when I've had to run to the bathroom when someone wearing something too strong came too close.

  11. I'm not too bad with scents unless it's guys who bathe in Calvin Klein. I guess they think women need to smell them in order to find them. I do hate strangely scented deodorants like pear.

  12. I'm not allergic but strong smells give me headaches so I can't wear perfume either.

  13. Debi: People just wear too much! It's crazy! I can feel my eyes watering!

Chris: The worst for me is really popular, but the name is totally not coming to me. I can picture the bottle, but not the name. They have a whole line of it, and it smells so bad and is guaranteed to stuff me up. The other one is Axe. My brother always has that stuff on, and he bathes in it. It's unreal!

Tink: Yeah, headaches wouldn't be fun!

  14. I don't like wearing much in the way of scent. I try to get shampoo, body wash and deodorant that all have the same base scent so that it's not too stinky. Most of the stuff is a vanilla chai so it's very light.

Going to the mall or the movies where there's lots of people nearly kills me - especially teens (both boys and girls) some you can smell coming a mile away.

  15. I think commericials are a lot of the reason why teenagers pour it on so strong...

  16. nope ..can't tolerate them. I like them for a few minutes, then I don't want them around anymore or I get naucious!

  17. If they are really strong I can't even tolerate the few minutes!

  18. I stayt far away from them! My eyes and throat swell from most scents! I really think there should be a law about them! I know some buildings, especially hospitals have notices that it is a scent free building. The problem is it's not enforced.

  19. I know, on the enforcement thing. My school was scent free and I know that I never really saw anyone do anything about it.

  20. When I was little, I complained about the section in the grocery store because the soaps and detergents made my eyes water and I'd sneeze. My mother said I was making it up, as no one had heard of allergies to smells then! Now of course I know better. I used to wear perfume, but since I have a funny body chemistry, it turns most things to a soap or chemical smell! eww so I was reduced to a few basic scents. Then we went perfume-free at work, and it's heaven. Except for the cleaning agents used by the stupid building cleaners, which are industrial and make us all sneeze! My home is perfume and dye and detergent free, it's all natural products, so my asthma is also kept under control this way.
Great little post, by the way!

  21. I admit that I like many body scents. I don't have any allergies to them. I don't wear strong scents myself, but I don't mind being around most of them.

  22. Susan: Yeah, I didn't start with allergies until I was older. Or, maybe I always had them and they were just explained away by other things! I know that when they were renovating work they found mold and the smell of bleach was horrible! I was so stuffed up by the end of my shift I could hardly breath!

Literary Feline: My mother is allergic to all types of perfume and she still enjoys the tester bottles at the mall. ha ha. I guess we can't help allergies, but that doesn't mean that things don't smell nice. :)
