Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer

Reason for Reading: Herding Cats, New Author, Dewey's Challenge
Mirandas disbelief turns to fear in a split second when an asteroid knocks the moon closer to the earth. How should her family prepare for the future when worldwide tsunamis wipe out the coasts, earthquakes rock the continents, and volcanic ash blocks out the sun? As summer turns to Arctic winter,Miranda, her two brothers, and their mother retreat to the unexpected safe haven of their sunroom, where they subsist on stockpiled food and limited water in the warmth of a wood-burning stove. In her journal, Miranda records the events of each desperate day, while she and her family struggle to hold on to their most priceless resource--hope. Includes a teaser to the companion novel, The Dead and the Gone.
Dear Dewey,

Yay! You used a different format for this review. I am so stealing because I think people are probably tired of me rambling!

Title and author of book? Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer

Fiction or non-fiction? Genre? Speculative Fiction

What led you to pick up this book? Everyone and their dog seems to have read this book! Figured it was my turn. :)

Summarize the plot: Read the book description thing up there...

What did you like most about the book? The way it was written. It was a very readable book! Miranda just had a really good voice. The diary-format was a very good idea on the authors' part. I found the book engaging and detailed. Miranda didn't annoy me, which is very important when a book is written from a child or teenage perspective! For me, anyway.

What did you like least? Well, really, I didn't mind anything about the book. I thought it was really good! Except, well, the ending... I didn't entirely like the ending, but that's a question down below.

What did you think of the writing style? I loved it, like I said above!

What did you think of the main character? She didn't annoy me! She wasn't perfect, she was a normal girl. I thought she was written very plausible, too. She wasn't super human or anything.

What did you think of the ending? I had issues with the ending, like I said above... But, well, I don't want to say how the book ends, so I will have to just leave it at that!

Okay, short and sweet!

Until next time...

  1. I read this one last year. I really liked it and thought it was good. I don't think I loved it as much as some of the other bloggers, but it was well worth reading.

I really want to read the other book....The Dead and the Gone? I think.

  2. My dogs haven't read this one yet, actually...think they might enjoy it? :P

I'm glad you liked this! I'm not sure what to make of the ending, to be honest. I took it one way, and then Chris e-mailed me telling me what his interpretation was, and that makes total sense too, only it changes things considerably! I can tell you what I thought originally and what he said if you want :P

  3. Well, I've read it but I don't have a dog. However, I guess you could say my cat read it with me, since she's pretty much always at my feet when I read.

I liked this one, but I didn't love it. And, yet, I'm dying to read the follow-up book. The title escapes me, at the moment. I don't even remember the ending of Life as We Knew It. Weird!!!

  4. I haven't read this one - you see, there are still rebels out there...

    Love the book cover, though.

And I like your link to Dewey's original review at the end. I'm going to do that, too, once I start posting reviews for my Dewey Reading Challenge. Now don't laugh. But I only finished the first book on my Dewey Reading Challenge a few weeks ago. And I started the challenge at the beginning of the year! *whispering* Don't tell anyone, but if you check back at my place next Thursday, there may just be a review for Geraldine Brooks' 'March'.

  6. Stephanie: I don't love it. I can't make up my mind about the ending! I want to read the other book, too. Ana tells me there is also a third book coming out. :)

Ana: It might end up their breakfast, so probably not a good idea. lol I know you and Chris' two ideas now, and I still have no idea what I think about the ending!

Bookfool: Cats always seem to get interested in me when I am reading. I have noticed that with all that cats my family owned over the years and when I kitty-sit my mother's current cat. I plan to read the next book at some point, too.

Julia: Yes, there are rebels to every cause, right? lol I look forward to your review of 'March'

Marg: That's too bad. There is going to be a third book, too, so I suppose it will be a really long time before you ever get to finish the trilogy!

  7. Oh man. I so want to read this. It's in the TBR of doom, so I may have to yank it out sooner rather than later. And all this talk about the ending definitely has me curious.

  9. I liked this one, but it was a little disappointing because I totally expected to love it. Also I was a little annoyed at how smooth everything ran for them at the beginning (preparation-wise)

But I thought the journal format was perfect - it gave me a better feel for the progress of emotions the family went through.

  10. Joanne: I know what you mean. I didn't love it either, I just liked it. :)

  11. I swear that this reminds me of a book I read as a sophmore in high school. I plan on reading this and then re-reading that book (we had to buy it so though I can't remember what the title is I know what it looks like and I think I know where it is lol).

  12. Tink: I hope you enjoy both this book and your reread of the other, which I look forward to hearing about!
