A Wrinkle in Time Read-Along --- Discussion Post

Today is the 15th, halfway through the month, so as promised here is a thread to discuss any spoilerish-type things. Comment away!

I had thought that each participant could come up with a couple questions and then they could be included in the reviews, but that's just a brainstorm. If you are interested you can either post them here or email them to me: kellyreads (at) hotmail (dot) com. If you are not interested in this idea I will scrap it.

Hopefully people are enjoying the read-along so far! You can comment and leave links to your posts, too, and then I will link to them here so everyone can read them!

  1. My post had to be pushed back until the 18th but it'll be up soon, along with my question.

It's funny what I did and didn't take from this as a kid. I remember certain things - the flowers Meg had to hold in order to breathe, the picture of the ant on the skirt, the kids bouncing the ball in time, the solution at the end, and the creatures without eyes. I remember pondering for years how one would explain color to someone who was born blind. It always made me very uncomfortable.

There were also things I didn't remember and that I was uncomfortable with this time around. For instance, the characterization and pacing both felt really choppy, and there was this assumption that the Christian god was the same god for every creature in the universe. That seemed farfetched and heavyhanded to me. But others apparently didn't get that impression. Maybe it was just me.

  3. There was a ton I didn't remember from when I first read this. I remember feeling much more anxious the first time around, of course I was a highly nervous and anxious 12 (or 13) year old and I can totally pinpoint the parts that would have had me cringing back then.

I have my post written, but I haven't posted yet because I think you had mentioned posting the reviews at the end of the month. ;) Waiting on your OK! ha!

  4. Like Amanda, the Christian element seemed really heavy-handed this time. Though I still felt the same a strong kinship to Meg.

I liked L'engle's world-building, but it seemed a bit rushed to me. Like she didn't quite take the time to *really* think it through. Or maybe it just wasn't that important to the story??

Also, I still don't understand tessering, but then my brain just doesn't wrap itself around the 4th and 5th dimensions. LOL.

I do remember the next one being my favorite in the series, though.

  5. I enjoyed listening to this very much. I had no idea what it was about; I enjoyed it more than I expected to.

  8. I've read Amanda's post and its comments, although I think I missed Care's and will go to it now. Anyway, I finished the book and have written my own post, where I've covered my thoughts, tried to comment on a couple of issues raised (the Christianity thing and Meg's characterisation) and put in a question of my own.

Kailana, I loved it just as much this time as I have for the past three decades that I've read it. Thanks for the revisit to one of my favorite authors ever, and my post can be found here.

I am so sorry, but I turned anonymous commenting off. I have had it from the very beginning, but that is how the spam is getting by my spam filter at the moment. If it is a big deal I will turn it back on and moderate all comments. I also changed moderation from older than 14 days to older than 7.
