Summer Update

For the last two hours I have been thinking that I really should get back into blogging, but it is always so hard to start again. I haven't blogged in a month and that means that there is a lot of things to talk about. It is hard to figure out where to start! 2010 will not be my best reading year ever, but I have been reading. There are books that I really want to review (and have to review) -but it is getting back into the swing of things that is the problem!

First off, despite the fact that I have hardly commented on a blog in months I actually have read a few here and there. I wait until my holds get down at the library and go through a bunch at one time. I am going to mark all as read tonight, though, and then hopefully I can get back to commenting!

I have been emailing people, so if you have a burning desire to talk to me that is a good way to do so! I figure I have been slack in everything else, so I should at least reply! If I haven't answered an email you sent it is because I forgot to mark it as unread to remind myself to go back to it! I pop on Twitter once in a while, but it is sporadic and I can watch conversation without saying a word to reveal that I am there.

One of the things I am really excited about is that one of my friends in real life, for lack of a better phrase, reads fantasy now! And, she loves Mercedes Thompson!!!! I think it is safe to say that Mercedes is our version of the Meyer/Rowling obsessions of many readers. If only the books came out faster! It is still over 6 months until the next book is released... In the meantime, my friend, who blogs at Reading in Bed, posted about Moon Called and then wrote a general gushing post about the series.

In my email correspondence of late I got one from Chris from Stuff as Dreams are Made on... where he mentioned how I used to read high fantasy when I started blogging. Of course, I read that and thought 'What does he mean used to?'. Then I got thinking about it and I DON'T read high fantasy much anymore. My TBR pile is full of great selections and continuations on of series that I love and I am not reading any of them. I really need to remedy this. It's because I buy my must-read series and I seem to actually only read books from the library or ones that arrive in the mail at a time when I am not reading anything. That being said, I received the new Sara Douglass and Robin Hobb in the mail and haven't read either of them yet...

I did finally read The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, though, and I loved it. I have owned the book since it essentially came out and only got around to it now. I am really excited about book two, but it won't be out until next year! I also read the new Isabel Allende and loved it! Her last couple novels didn't really call to me, but I did like this one and I think she is back in her groove. If you have never read her before I strongly recommend that you try something. I have loved her since way before I started blogging and will for many years to come!

I do plan to write some reviews, but since I will never be able to review everything I have read this year so far, I have to decide what I am going to do to tackle some of it. There is also the problem with time going by and me not entirely remembering the books, so it would be hard to do the books justice!

  1. Welcome back! Great update post. :)

I don't think I've ever really read any high fantasy, although the hubs enjoys the genre. I'm more of an urban fantasy gal myself.

  2. Thanks, Colleen! I read a lot of urban fantasy now, but I need to get back to the roots of fantasy!

  3. Welcome back! Mini-reviews are sometimes a good way to tackle a lot of books at a time and get your general thoughts across, or at least that is what I found :)

  4. Kelly!!!! What a great way to start the morning--finding that you'd posted!

Sounds like I not only need to give Allende a read, but Mercedes Thompson as well. :)

(Btw, sorry I disappeared from twitter last night--kid "emergency.")

Anyway, I sure wouldn't worry about catching up with reviews for all the books you've read--that sounds like way too much pressure. Just pick the ones you're excited about writing and make it fun for yourself! :D

  5. Hi! I've been having hard time getting caught up, too, and honestly found it almost a relief that there weren't a million posts from you in my reader, now that I finally have a moment to catch up on some blog reading! Yeah, I'm waiting impatiently for the next Mercy Thompson book, too. Sigh.

  7. Good to hear from you! I'm glad you posted. I wouldn't worry too much about trying to get to all your reviews. Just do what's comfortable and we'll all be here to read what you have to say. :)

  8. Great to hear from you Kelly, :D Like everyone else has said. I wouldn't worry about catching up, it's more important to just comment on the books that you're inspired to.

  10. Hey, I think you were the one to turn me on to Mercy and the crew. Thank you, thank you, thank you for that. Absolutely love her and Adam? Good grief, he's better than Ranger and Morelli together!!

Glad to have you back and I hope you stick around...

  11. Hey Kelly--good to see an update from you. I totally understand where you're coming from with the break and trying to get back in. It's taken me about four months to get over my four month absence. I have a bad memory for books I've read months ago that I still haven't reviewed so I've started listening to some of them on audio. Anyway...I wouldn't really worry about it. I'm sure lots of other good things will come up for you to post about.

    Best wishes!

Like you I read a lot of urban fantasy now and love Mercy and Anna and Charles. I'm hoping to get back into blogging too but if you don't I'll grab your email as I'd love to stay in touch :)

  15. I'm thrilled for you that your friend has started reading fantasy. While I love talking books with people in general, it is always a bit more fun to discuss genres you like with your friends.

I've got to get to Name of the Wind at some point, but I am loathe to do so until I get through the rest of the GRRM chunksters, since I'm enjoying that series.

I am so sorry, but I turned anonymous commenting off. I have had it from the very beginning, but that is how the spam is getting by my spam filter at the moment. If it is a big deal I will turn it back on and moderate all comments. I also changed moderation from older than 14 days to older than 7.
