Friday Reads - 2nd Edition (A Day Late)

I am really happy to be back in the reading mood lately, but I just can't seem to find time to do it. I am a bit disappointed because there is so much that I want to be reading and I am going so slowly! January is usually a good reading month for me; so hopefully it starts to pick-up soon.

I have been thinking a lot about my reading lately. In 2012 I would really like to read an essay collection a month, read more short stories, take advantage of the Shakespearean challenge I joined and read more plays, and then of course read more poetry for my own co-hosted event. Then, I would really like to increase my non-fiction reading I used to read a lot more than I do now and my shelves are littered with really interesting looking books I just haven't got around to reading. I also want to cutback on the library. I still plan to use it, but I am going to keep the pile small to avoid temptation. Right now I only have 5 or 6 books out from there and I am going to try and keep it around there. As to reading numbers? I don't really care so much about the grand total, but I want to try and make the majority of my reading from my physical TBR pile. These are the things I have been thinking about for 2012. I am also trying to listen to more audiobooks, but I have mentioned that goal in previous posts.

Moving on. I am currently reading:

I was doing really well reading this book, but I keep getting interrupted and I am starting to slow down. The other night I was reading along and then I had to go shovel the driveway because we had a snowstorm. I was planning to get back to it right afterwards, but the guy came home early from work and my night was rearranged. I am liking it so far, so hopefully I can dedicate some time to it soon. It is for a group read. (Personal e-book)
ah, Shakespeare. I really have a hard time with plays and reading for fun, but I am determined to figure out the big deal surrounding some of the plays I have never read before. I started this last night and I am all ready thinking I missed a bunch. We will see how it goes and whether I can keep up this play a month. (Personal copy)
My second non-fiction read of the year. The first night I read this I managed to get through 100 pages. Since then I have hardly touched it. I had actually hoped to finish it this week so I could start a new non-fiction read, but that would mean actually have time to read it. It is really interesting and I am enjoying it so far. (Library)
I started this book at the very beginning of the year and have only picked it up once since. It's my first Sedaris and I am enjoying it, but I just haven't had time to get back into it. Every time I say I am going to something comes up. I am looking forward to more from this collection and hopefully more from Sedaris later in the year. (Personal Copy)
Another book I never seem to be able to get back around to reading. This is not surprising because short stories are not really my thing, but in this case it is a time issue. I really need more hours in the day! (Personal Copy)
Now, I did listen to this while shovelling snow the other night, so that was one thing that worked out! I am on chapter 12, I believe. I am really enjoying my listening of it and plan to read a physical copy later this year. I know I get distracted and miss things here and there, so I want to make sure I get the whole effect because I am enjoying the read so much.

  1. I hadn't heard of Ready Player One before but now I'm very keen on reading it (just looked it up on amazon).
I often get stuck at 100 of non-fiction books.
I really want to read from my piles this year, although I still will buy some new releases.

    1. I am loving Ready Player One. It is nerdy goodness. :)

I often get stuck on 100 pages of many books. It seems to be a pattern for me.

I will still buy here and there, too. My problem is more using the library way too much.

  2. Ha! That's the great thing about audio--can still "read" while you're doing other things. I'm about to start cleaning and will pop on my current audio. Yay! Also thrilled that you're liking Ready Player One!

    1. Yes. It worked well to be shovelling and listening. It almost made the snow fun.

  3. I listened to Naked on audio right before the end of the year - loved it! His voice is perfect for reading his own work. :)

  5. YAY for #1Q84! I will attempt questions in a blog post for the end of Book 1. Probably by the time I actually write these, you will be caught up.
I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to read the Moonwalk Einstein book! and I've read Naked.
You've also reminded me that I need to find that darn mp3 player.
    Still got snow?

    1. I will try to get to the end of Book 1 in 1Q84 very soon. I haven't had a chance to read it lately.

Moonwalking with Einstein is interesting. I hopefully will have a chance to read a bit of that today. Not to mention get back to Naked.

The snow was rained away the next day pretty much. Now it is just cold.

  6. One of my plans is to try and control my library borrowing too. Books pile up here at home while I borrow from the library, it's so silly! Not that I'll be able to give it up completely. LOL.

  7. Gosh, so many books on the list all at once! I have Naked on my shelf but haven't read it yet. I also have a Richard Sheridan play on my shelf that I want to read but I don't know if I will - I HOPE I do because he is supposed to be very funny!

    1. I had forgotten you had Naked on your shelf or I would have waited and made that our buddy read for later in the year. I don't gravitate to drama, but I really should try and do so more.

  8. Wow, you have such great plans for 2012! I haven't made much since I'm going back to school after a one-semester break, except for one : read more of what's already on my shelves and resist the shiny new things more.
Listening to an audiobook while shoveling snow sounds kind of fun!

    1. Yes, I want to avoid the shiny a bit more, too. I would like to really decrease the size of my TBR this year. It is getting neglected.

  9. I'm reading 1Q84 right now, too. I'm really enjoying it, but because of its density, it is reading slowly, so in between, I'm reading The Lantern and The Hypnotist. The Lantern isn't really keeping my interest, but boy, The Hypnotist is!

Moonwalking with Einstein is on my wish list!

    1. Yes, 1Q84 is slow going for me, too. That's too bad you are not enjoying The Lantern, but I look forward to your review of The Hypnotist.

Moonwalking with Einstein strikes me as a book you should read.

  10. I seriously need to get my hands on Ready Player One. I've heard rave reviews about it, and with the audiobook being narrated by Wil Wheton, you can't go amiss!

  11. It sounds like you have a lot of great reads on the go! I'm attempting to read more nonfiction as well this year and just checked one out from my local library. I'm also hoping to keep my library numbers done but I'm not doing very well with that yet. It is just too easy to put books that I want to read on hold...I guess that at least it keeps me from spending money :)

    1. I own lots of non-fiction. I really need to read more of it. Instead here I am reading one from the library... I have a bad habit of reading blogs with my library website open...

  13. I really like plays, but don't read many of them. I tend to struggle with Shakespeare, though I've liked most of his that I have read. Have you ever read "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller--that's definitely one of my favorites. Annie and I read a few Agatha Christie plays a few years back--they were pretty fun, too.

    1. I tend to struggle with Shakespeare, too. I have to be in the right mood and paying lots of attention. I just don't have the luxury to pay that much attention. I didn't even know Agatha Christie had plays...

  14. You're reading some good ones!!! I don't know how you can keep them all straight in your mind! I can only handle 2 books at one time and they have to be really really different.
