Poetry: Read More/Blog More – A Monthly Event! - Month 2

Hi everyone! Welcome to the second month of the Read More/Blog More Poetry Event. I am sorry I am a bit late. I had planned to have this post up hours ago.

This month sort of got away from me, so I am just going to answer the questions Lu posted on her blog last month. Then you will find Mr. Linky at the bottom.

- Your favorite poem
Probably 'Goblin Market' by Christina Rossetti. I read it for the first time back in university and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed the reread of it last year. I own a copy of a book with it in it. I held on to it after university.

- Your favorite poet
I really enjoy Emily Dickinson and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. I haven't read either of them in years, though. And Christina Rossetti, but other than 'Goblin Market' I haven't read her in years either.

- Do you read poetry often? Why or why not?
uh, nope. If I did I would probably have a better post for today! I have just never got into poetry. I have been lucky to find poets here and there that I enjoy, but I don't search them out as much as I should.

- Why did you start reading poetry?
Well, I started reading poetry this year because I want to expand my horizons a bit. I am not off to a good start as this is month two and I read nothing!

- Do you ever write poetry?
Nope! I had to back in like high school and that was traumatic enough, thanks.

- Is there a poet you’ve always wanted to read but never have?
um, probably, but nothing is jumping out to me at the moment.

- What do you hope to accomplish through a year of writing about poetry?
Well, I will hopefully figure out some sort of method to write about poetry. I had a hard time figuring out what to say last month. I also hope to pick-up more on imagery and things I wouldn't necessarily notice. Then, I would just like to be able to say I do like poetry by finding authors and poems that I enjoy.

- Do you think you’ll read more poetry this year?
Hopefully the rest of the year will go better than this month!

Sorry! I was even slower because I hadn't used Mr. Linky in ages. (I couldn't remember my log-in...)

If I were to answers those questions, our answers would be eerily similar. I don't read poetry at all and have joined this event to start a journey which will lead me who knows where ....

  3. I'm exploring all types of poetry this year, also had to get my post written ahead of time so didn't use the questions. I apologize if my post doesn't quite fit the format but hope that it at least achieves the goal of reading more poetry - of all types.

    1. I wish I had got my post organized ahead of time. I came down with a cold, though, and I just got lazy the last week or so. I don't really think we have a format, so whatever you want to post about is probably fine!

  4. I have a post for this later today. But I wanted to stop by and recommend you read Molly Peacock's book, How to Read a Poem (http://savvyverseandwit.com/2009/06/how-to-read-poem-and-start-poetry.html) I found it even more helpful.

    1. Thanks! I went to see about buying a copy but it appears to be out-of-print. The library has it, though, so I put it on hold. :)

    2. For some reason I am unable to access Savvy Verse and Wit, at all. The message says that I am forbidden.

Is this more computer madness or have I offended you somehow?

    3. No, you have not offended. The wonderful server gods have intervened and made the blog unavailable for a few hours yesterday, but all seems to be well today. I don't see a comment from you, but perhaps you can leave one today! I will check the spam comment folder just to be sure.

    4. I like Ellen Hopkins off the top of my head. She has a young adult trilogy about drug addiction that is very well done. And other books.

  8. I am partial to Geoffrey Chaucer and William Blake. I think I am going to spend this summer getting reacquainted with them. I'm hoping that my review pilee will have gone by then. :-)

Thanks for hosting this! I've been wanting to read more poetry this year, but it's incredibly hard to review because poetry is so subjective.

  12. This is such a wonderful idea! I am so bad at making poetry a priority. I'd love to discover a few more poets I don't know well. Also, did you know the Postal Service is putting out poet stamps this year!

  13. Sorry for my delinquent post which has just been published. It is on an essay I found on the Internet today by poet Mark Doty in response to the question: "Can Poetry Console a Grieving Public?" One of the interesting things he said, of many, was that the Barnes & Noble in Union Square, NYC was totally empty in the days immediately following 9-11, except for the poetry section.

I am a poetry newbie and am finding solace in my grief journey, in different ways than with prose works. Thanks for hosting this monthly event!

I am so sorry, but I turned anonymous commenting off. I have had it from the very beginning, but that is how the spam is getting by my spam filter at the moment. If it is a big deal I will turn it back on and moderate all comments. I also changed moderation from older than 14 days to older than 7.
