Podcasts...

One aspect of the online world that I haven't paid a lot of attention to before is Podcasts. Marg posted about two on Adventures of an Intrepid Reader, though, and I decided that I really should start paying more attention. So, I thought I would write a quick post and ask for some recommendations.

  1. Wish I could help, but every podcast I've ever tried to listen to has bored me to tears, so I gave up on them. Jason likes a lot of history and literary theory related ones...

  2. Books on the Nightstand
    The Readers
Writing Excuses (technically for writers, but I find it fascinating as a reader)

I also listen to a number of SFF (and Doctor Who) ones. If you'd like suggestions for any of those, let me know.

    1. I would love some SFF suggestions. That is what I enjoyed reading. :)

      Thanks for the suggestions!

    2. - The Coode Street Podcast (two guys who work for Locus, one in Australia, the other in the US)
      - Galactic Suburbia (three Australian women discussing SF especially in regard to women's issues)
      - Kick-Ass Mystic Ninjas (been quiet since 2010 but a new once came out yesterday)
      - Science Fiction Book Review Podcast (he's quite opinionated and I don't always agree, but always an interesting listen)
      - SF Signal (I prefer the panels discussion to the interviews)
      - SF Squeecast (Seanan McGuire, Elizabeth Bear, Catheryne Valente and Paul Cornell "squeeing" about the good stuff in SFF)
      - Dan Carlin's Hardcore History (not SF, obviously, and been quiet for a while, but again, a new one recently)

  3. I love Books on the Nightstand and The Readers, too!

Other good book-related ones: The Guardian Books Podcast (http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/series/books), the NYTimes book review podcast (http://www.nytimes.com/ref/books/books-podcast-archive.html) and Open Book, on BBC Radio 4 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/openbook).

Non book-related ones I really like: Answer Me This (very funny - http://answermethis.wordpress.com/), A Way With Words (about language - http://www.waywordradio.org/) and quite a few football-related ones! :-)

  4. I don't actually listen to any book-related podcasts, but books are mentioned on many podcasts I do listen to. I am basically an NPR junkie - I love Radiolab, Science Friday, The Splendid Table and Planet Money, particularly. I also recently started listening to the 99% Invisible podcast, which is really interesting. And I LOVE Stuff You Missed in History Class.

But the first series of podcasts I listened to is one that Marg mentioned as well - A History of the World in 100 Objects, which is really interesting.

I like the idea of podcasts, but the time involved in downloading and listening overwhelms me.

  6. I don't know ANYTHING about them. I have a blogging friend who mentioned me in one of his casts but I can't even figure out how to listen. (but mostly if I have time to listen to anything I'd rather it be an audiobook or music).

    1. Yes, I tend to listen to music all the time for background noise anyway...

  7. Also Books and Authors from BBC Radio 4. Somehow I'd unsubscribed myself from that one and I've spent today catching up the "My favourite read" episodes as those are my favourites.

I have ME/CFS so I spend a lot of time needing to lie down and rest without ever quite falling asleep so podcasts are wonderful. I can listen to them with my eyes closed quite happily.

If you use an iDevice, I also HIGHLY recommend an app called iTired. You can start a podcast (or anything else) and then open iTired. After a length of time you set, it beeps to ask you if you're still awake. If you tap it/shake it/adjust the volume buttons, it starts the timer again and you keep listening. If you don't respond, it stops the playback. You can also set it to rewind the playback to the last point where you responded.

Since I never know if I'm going to stay awake or drift off, I just love this little app. I never used to be able to figure out at what point I fell asleep, but this does it for me.

  8. I don't know if you ended up going to my original list of podcasts or not, but if not here is the link.

Others that I have discovered since then that I enjoyed include a Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's Film Reviews from the BBC, NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour, Witness (BBC) which is short podcasts about events from history, and This American Life. There are more but those are all pretty good.

  9. I have zero suggestions, but have been wondering about podcasts myself so wanted to say thanks for this post - so many great suggestions to explore!

  10. I used to subscribe to Slate's Audio Book Club and B&N's Meet the Writers, but it's been several years since I've listened to any of these casts. Audio books have taken over my listening time!

  11. The Bookrageous Podcast is my very favorite. Books on the Nightstand is the runner up. :)

OH! And The Bat Segundo Show is great as well.

  12. Everyone mentioned Books On the Nightstand. I like that one. Then there's the Smart Bitches/ Dear Author one, if you like romance book talk. Since you mentioned SFF, there's a HP Lovecraft one: HPPodcraft.

  13. I like Books on the Nightstand and the one from The New Yorker. I'll have to try The Bookrageous one. All the other suggestions looked interesting, too!
