Books Walked in My Door

I am having a retail therapy week, so I bought books...

I got:
Dramacon: Ultimate Edition by Svetlana Chmakova - Yes, I bought the 3-in-1 just because the library doesn't have the third one and I really want to read it.
Devil's Brood by Sharon Kay Penman - I don't even want to admit how little I have read of her...
The Devil's Queen
by Jeanne Kalogridis
Order in Chaos by Jack Whyte - I have the first two in hardcover, so wanted the third one in hardcover, too. Have I read the first two? NOPE!

Then, with book credit I got:
Saint City Sinners by Lilith Saintcrow... Even though it is book 4 and I haven't read the first 3
In the Woods by Tana French - Not my read, but I was curious
Bluebeard's Egg by Margaret Atwood - Curiousity
Dry by Augusten Burroughs - I have been meaning to read him forever
The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks - Only because it was free
Salvation in Death by J.D. Robb - One day I will read this series again
The Scar by China Mieville - Because I want to read this trilogy
Lord John and the Hand of Devils by Diana Gabaldon - Only because I had credit
Burning Bright by Tracy Chevalier - I have enjoyed her other stuff
Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade by Gabaldon - Only because I had credit
Oranges are not the only fruit by Jeanette Winterson - Heard good things about this
A Student of Weather by Elizabeth Hay - Liked what I have read by her
Clearing in the West by Nellie McClung - Always wanted to read this. I love Nellie McClung
Charmed Life by Diana Wynne Jones - What are the odds of getting the first book in a series at a second hand store? I also have this out from the library, which means I can bring it back and make the TBR pile one less smaller.

Did it make me feel better? I don't know... I don't think so. I have to find room on my shelf for everything and I am still sad. It normally does work, though, so I am disappointed it failed. Back to not buying books until October.

  1. I'm sorry you are sad. :( You know, I've acquired A TON of books these past two weeks and come to think of it I think it's because I've been sad, too. I didn't even realize I was doing it.

In any case, you got yourself some great finds! I hope one of them lifts your spirits.

  2. I'm with Amy...I'm sorry you are sad. But buying books should make you just a wee bit happier, right? And dang, did you get some books!!

I can honestly say I haven't read one of those books, but I do want to read some Lilith Saintcrow. And I've read a couple books by Sharon Penman and they were both fantastic!

  4. Sorry to hear you're feeling sad and that the books didn't do the trick. Maybe they will when you start reading them. I can thoroughly recommend In the Woods as an excellent read to lose yourself in!

I have only read one of the bookson your list which is terrible (The Scar). I am sorry though that your buying spree didn't make you feel better. Maybe reading them will? Have lots of hot bubble baths with anything nice and smelly you can find.

  6. cath beat me to it lol.. In the Woods is a really good book and it's "not my type of book" either! I just read Charmed and it was enjoyable also.. those are the only two I know anything about.. what a bummer when books don't snap you out of being down..but I do know many "downs" aren't that easy to snap out of. It's sorta like looking in your refrigerator knowing you want something...but there you stand looking in there for 20 minutes and nothing is jumping out at you to satify you. (btdt.)

  8. I'm really sorry that you've been feeling down and I do agree with your thoughts about finding room in yourself for everything. We all have to do that and at times it is a particularly challenging thing to do.

I think retail therapy can be helpful, but probably more for dealing with smaller annoyances and a need to just do something good for yourself, not necessarily to heal deeper hurts. That being said, you have so many wonderful books there that I hope at least some of them prolong the good effects of retail therapy by being books that have a profound, comforting impact on you.

Know that we are here for you.

  9. *hugs* Sadly some things are too hurtful for even a book buying spree to make us feel better. But at least you got yourself some awesome sounding books. Bluebeard's Egg was actually my very first Atwood. I hope you enjoy it!

  10. Oh Kailana, I'm sorry you are feeling so sad that even a book-buying spree didn't help you feel better by a little. That is a serious sad you have. Here's a *hug* and I can recommend In the Woods, like Cath and Pat; I have Charmed LIfe - read it years ago, it is fun! and I envy you having A Student of Weather - heard good things too - and the Nellie McClung book, which I have never heard of! So if making all your blogging buddies drool doesn't help, then I recommend some chocolate -maybe lots of ice cream in this heat! - and some quiet reading time. Seriously, and some music too.

  13. It makes me sad that you're sad! Hope things turn around soon, Kelly.

I think I might have to buy Annie the one volume edition of Dramacon. She just read the first one and LOVED it. Add to that the fact that you and Ana both love it. And well, it seems like that might be a worthwhile purchase. And would make for easy borrowing on my part. ;)

  14. Hugs to you. I hope you feel better soon. As the others have said, it is indeed a sad day if books don't perk us up. :(

  15. Retail therapy in the form of book buying sounds great. I'm sorry that it didn't give you the pick-me-up that you were looking for. Go sit outside in the sun for a while, smile, and try not to worry about things. I do this on a daily basis. Sometimes it works, other days I just go with my feelings and let them work themselves out.

I have SCAR in my TBR for the longest time and stuff just keeps piling up (I bought three more new books today)...
