Week in Review (3)

Life

Well, we finally got the snow. Last Wednesday it snowed all day, so we had quite the mess on Thursday morning. A friend was nice enough to come and plow us out. As the weather here always hovers around the freezing point, we never get light snow anymore. It is always really wet and really heavy. The weather was quite different than predicted last week in general because there was supposed to be rain after the snow, but it never warmed up to that point. This winter is just weird and I feel like I say that every winter now for one reason or another. Mackie hurt his paw running around a couple weeks ago and crashing through some ice. I know you can buy shoes for dogs, but I figure the dog will come in missing at least one and then I will have to go out and find it. So, we are just trying to keep him calmer when he is outside. I have to say, the hurt paw didn't slow him down much. He found stairs hard and jumping up on the bed, but otherwise he just walked on 3 paws or limped.

I rejoined Postcrossing last week and have been organising my postcards. I have vintage cards from my family and I have been going through them. I bought plastic covers for them and a new box so I can actually show people them. They have spent too many years hidden away. While I have been going through them, I have posted a couple of them on Facebook and shared the family history. I am trying to decide how to write notes on them. I was thinking post-it notes stuck to the plastic, but not sure if they will stay stuck. I always end up with a million projects on the go, huh? lol

Currently Reading

Been on a graphic novel kick, so nothing technically in progress right now.

Weekly Reading

Lazarus - Volume 5: Cull ~ I bought this last year and was so excited. I love this series about a strong female. I should have reread the series first, though. I forgot some details and it took me a bit to get hooked because I was trying to remember things. There is a new book out a bit later this year, so I plan to do a reread before it to refresh my memory entirely. I did really enjoy this, don't get me wrong, but I have too many comic series on the go and the storylines kind of run together or get hazy. I am glad I checked this series out, though, and look forward to more. Strongly recommended!

Sex Criminals - Volume 4: Fourgy ~ My mother actually bought this for me for Christmas. She asked if there were any comics I wanted and I sent the list to the store itself, so I am not sure what she thought when she went to pick this one up. lol It's a strange series that I wouldn't expect to like at all, but I have been enjoying it. Because I hardly read last year, it has been a while since I read the previous volumes in these series I am catching up on, and I think I should have done a reread of this one, too. I will for Volume 5. Strongly recommended!

Lady Killer - Volume 2 ~ I was excited when I found out there was a Volume 2 in this series. Volume 1 kind of seemed like a standalone. There was no marking on it to say Volume 1. It was just called Lady Killer. This was another one of the comics I decided to catch-up on at Christmas. A stay-at-home mother who has a secret life makes for an interesting story-line. The ending was a bit of a cliff-hanger, so that means a Volume 3. I am excited. Strongly recommended!

Watching

Gilmore Girls continues to be the main thing I am watching. I am on Season 4 now. I am enjoying it. It is good, mindless fun. There are not complicated storylines to keep track of or anything. I think it fits my mind at the moment. I am looking forward to seeing the new season that was released. I will get there soon!

I told myself I was not starting any new shows because I am so behind at the moment. But, I heard about this show and how it was done by the same person that did House and decided yesterday to give it a try. I love it! It has the same wit as House did, but it also is new and fresh. It is a show about an autistic surgeon. Freddie Highmore does such a good job playing him, too. He really is a talented actor. I look forward to more of this show!

I also watched Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon, The Curse of Oak Island, The Good Place, and a bit of Once Upon a Time. Oh, and Star Trek: Discovery. I still need to watch the newest This is Us. This list is why I didn't want to start any new shows. lol We also watched the episode of David Letterman on Netflix where he interviews Barack Obama. Very well done!

Week in Review (2)

Life

Life has been interesting. 2018 is starting off quiet, but also with weird weather. Usually, after Christmas, we get snow. We currently have 16 degree Celsius weather and can see our lawn. It is also raining. If all the rain we have got was snow, we may have seen our lawn again in May. I don't mind a bit of snow, but you also have to be practical. My heat is off right now. When can you normally turn your heat off in January? It is supposed to get cold next week, and I am sure we will get snow before the winter is over, but still weird! They say that Nova Scotia is, on average, the warmest province in Canada and I believe it. (Only because B.C. goes so far up North).

I have to go off on a tangent. I am going to complain about my experience with Amazon. We live off the beaten path, so I have Amazon Prime for those things that are not easy to get here. This amazing Amazon Prime is supposed to make parcels arrive sooner than if you don't have Amazon Prime. Except, they use Purolator for their deliveries a lot of the time and their service is terrible. I got a parcel yesterday that they first lost and then they kept blaming the weather for being delayed. Yes, provinces are having storms, but when the parcel is in my province for 2-3 days and you keep telling me it is delayed because of bad weather, I am going to get mad. There was no bad weather.  I became that customer. I probably complained 5 times about the poor service and have really reconsidered my renewing my Prime. Is it worth it? Sure, it is great if I am getting low on cat litter, for example, and don't have time to run to a store that carries cat litter, but if the parcel takes a week to get here... I need to go to a store to get litter anyway. (Not really what happened, just an example.) I have been dissatisfied for a while because I remember when you preordered a book, you would get it a bit early. Now, I am way behind. But, no bookstore here anymore sadly. I know people love Amazon, but I am just frustrated lately.

Weekly Reading

The Hate U Give ~ The first audiobook of 2018. I loved it! It was on a lot of Best of.. lists for 2017, and I did start it in December of 2017, but it was a great way to start 2018 off. The narrator was really good, too. I am almost nervous to say any more about this book, but just know it is worth checking out. Strongly recommended!

Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda ~ I followed up a great audiobook, with a great novel. This is one I have wanted to check out for a while and I am so glad I finally did! It was really well written. The author really expresses the life of a 16 year old boy well. I got really engrossed in this book. It is another strongly recommended read!

Nimona ~ In continuing with books I have been meaning to check out, I finally checked out this one. It was another fun read. Nimona was a fun character. Noelle Stevenson always writes great stuff. I look forward to what she does next! Strongly Recommended!

Saga - Volume 8 ~ I love me some Saga! I am always very excited when a new copy is released. This was no exception. I am all ready looking forward to Volume 9! Strongly recommended!

Watching

I am up to Season 3 of this series. I am enjoying checking it out. It is exactly what I like in a show, but I just didn't get into it before. We will see how it continues to go.

We are still only on Season 1 of this show. I think we watched one whole episode since my last post. I like it. I am not sure why we have such a hard time with it.

I don't watch a lot of movies, but I love musicals and I LOVED this! I have always loved the idea of circus, but never go because there are some negative ideas surrounding them nowadays. But, you have to applaud P.T. Barnum for seeing something in people that no one else did and going from rags to riches. It was so well done!

I also watched the newest episodes of The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon, and The Good Place.

Saga - Volume 8

Week in Review (1)

Life

I decided to see if I can resurrect this blog. I haven't blogged since August because my reading was pretty much non-existent last year. And, I know that I can talk about things other than reading, but I just never sit down and write the post. In 2016, I blogged every Sunday. I am going to see if I can do that again for 2018.

It is hard to recap so much time. In January I always think I need to get back on track with things. So, I make lists and pick up old hobbies. Then, as the year goes, I start fizzling. One big thing I did in 2016, that I slacked on last year, was my bullet journal. I think once I got out of the habit of doing it last year, it became like I was not accountable to my plans or projects. This year, even though I still have a perfectly nice journal left from last year, I started right from scratch and am determined to get back in the habit. I like to do lists and checking off when I accomplish something. I also got a new package of the pens I really like for Christmas. I am sure projects will fall to the wayside, but we will see how it goes.

I really just want to read this year. I hardly read anything last year. It was one of my worst reading years ever. My TBR didn't really grow last year, but it didn't really decrease either. I need to get back on track with that!

Weekly Reading

The Sandman - Volume 1: Preludes & Nocturnes ~ This was actually a reread for me. I added it to Goodreads in 2011, but I know that I read it before I started reading Fables in 2009. I hated it. I was not reading graphic novels yet, it was weird, and I never read on in the series. But, since I got more into graphic novels, I felt like this was a huge series missing from my reading. Over the holidays, the e-books of this series went on sale. So, now I have to hopefully like this series more than I did the first time I tried it. On the plus side, I enjoyed this more than I did the first time I read it and immediately started Volume 2 after finishing it. This just goes to show you can evolve as a reader. When I read this the first time, I never thought I would be the big graphic novel reader I became. This book is why I was hesitant to start Fables, etc. Glad it went better this time. Recommended!

The Sandman - Volume 2: The Doll's House ~ I then moved on to Volume 2 in the series. This was the first time I ever read this particular volume and it went pretty well. The series is definitely on the darker side, but it is becoming a page turning type of series. A series that follows the Sandman around can't help but being intriguing because dreams are something we all share and the Sandman is just one of those things we have heard about before. I am glad I decided to finally add this series to my list of read series. Recommended!

The Sandman - Volume 3: Dream Country ~ This volume collects 4 short stories into one. The stories are all unrelated, but The Sandman, Morpheus, plays minor roles. I enjoyed the story about what cats dream about because I can totally see cats believing they are the top of the chain and wanting to be there again. It is a good story to fit cats personalities. The other stories caught my interest as well. This was a shorter volume and I read it rather quickly. Recommended!

Everafter - Volume 1: The Pandora Protocol ~ Fables! Fables! I love Fables! I was kind of putting reading this series off, but when I got Volume 2 this month... I decided it was time. I am happy every time they decide to do a spin-off series. This series takes place after the events in the main story-line and includes characters we have met before, but also some new ones. I enjoyed it! Recommended!

Everafter - Volume 2: The Unsentimental Education ~ When I went to read this, I looked up when Volume 3 was supposed to be out. No Volume 3. And, upon reading this, I would say that it was because the series got cancelled. This seemed a bit rushed and there are some story-lines that didn't get explained at all. It was still good, but it could have been better. I am all caught up on Fables now and that makes me sad. I hope there is something else set to come out, but this might be the end of a 9 year friendship! (I read my first volume of Fables in January of 2009.)

Watching

One of the reasons why my reading died last year was because I watched way more TV last year than I normally do. I need to find a happier medium this year, but I did start out the year with Gilmore Girls. I have definitely watched a lot of this before, but I am not sure if I saw every episode. I am finishing up the second season and having fun with it. This is a lead up to finally watch the reunion show. It will take me a bit of time to get to the end, but I am happy I randomly chose this show as my next project.

I am watching Gilmore Girls on my own, but with the guy I am attempting to catch-up in Once Upon a Time. I have seen the first season about 3 times now, and we are about to watch the second season for the second time. But, then we fizzle. It usually happens because I generally want to read instead of watch TV. So, we will see how it goes. We have been stalled on this show since earlier in the week. I want to get moving on it because The Crown is another show we watch together and I want to see the second season.

For those of you that do not know, I live in Nova Scotia, Canada. I am very aware of Oak Island, but have never actually been on it. They allow tours in the summer now, so really must get around to that before they close the island again. I am sporadic with this show, but have been watching the most recent season. We watched the most recent episode this week and it was kind of a filler episode. I keep saying that if they find anything amazing, it will be on the news before the episode airs. They have definitely gone further than others, though, so I keep hoping they will figure out the mystery. It is something that has intrigued me since I was a little kid.

One of my favourite shows that I actually have watched as it aired over the years. It continues to be fun, but I don't think I like the newest season as much as some of the others. The wedding is getting fun, though, so the latest season is starting to get going.

I am not sure if I like this show, but I keep watching. It is not as funny as The Big Bang Theory, but it has potential. I just have never been a big fan of young main characters, but I am doing better than I used to. And, Sheldon's mom is so much like his mother in The Big Bang Theory. I know it is her daughter, but she is my favourite character.

I was starting to wonder where this show went. I hadn't seen an episode in a long time. It is a fun show, but nothing amazing. I enjoy watching it, though, and am curious where the show is going to go next.
