Christmas Presents

So, I am the sort of person that has lots of good ideas (I think so anyways) and rarely has the time to actual act on them. Tonight, I had a really cool idea, but it will take time to do and I am not sure if I will have the time to actually do it! But, I really like my idea. I am not going to share unless I find that I have the time to actual do it, though. It will be a surprise, but here is a hint, the title of this post is related to the idea... (duh, huh?)

On to other topics, do you think it is bad to read the books that you buy other people for Christmas before giving it to them? Normally I only buy books for other people that I have actually read, but this year... I did not, and well, I am of course tempted! So, do you do it, or do you think it is a very bad idea?

Oh, and, come up people! The Advent Calendar is calling, and there are people that have not signed up that I personally think should, so unless you want me to start bugging you about it, you should just sign up already!

I think it really depends on the person who's receiving the gift, I know a couple of people I'd even tell and they wouldn't mind. If you think someone would be picky about it, just don't tell them, no one needs to know. :-P
Anyway, I don't think it's a crime, not like it's a bath product or a bar of chocolate, if you don't damage the book, no harm done. ;-)

  2. I'm with Ana, If there's no harm done to the book, then the person will never know ;) And if you're anything like me you would be very careful with your books and take very good care of them, so go ahead and read it! You can't even tell that most of my books have been read unless something happened to them by accident.

I haven't signed up for the advent calendar because I have no idea what to do for it!! But go ahead and put me down...I'll think of something...how about December 9th? Will that work?

  3. I buy books that I want to read to give as gifts. That way, after they've read it, I can borrow it :-)

  4. I bought a book for my mom and I've been having a hard time reasoning with myself about not reading it too. I'm pretty sure she'll like it because she loves the way the author writes but I don't know for sure because I haven't read it myself and it's new so I can't pick it up from the library either :(

  6. I'm not really comfortable reading a book I buy new for someone else. But that's just me. Like Dev, I'm more apt to tell the person I'd like to read it when he or she is done.

  7. I just gave away a book as a Christmas present that my mom had already read. I felt it gave the gift integrity, since my mom totally loved it.

Kailana, I've finally posted my first review for the Four-Legged Friend Reading Challenge:
    The Golden Compass

  8. I think it depends on the person and on what kind of reader you are. My wife and my friend Jeff frequently tease me because I have the ability to read any book, hardback, paperback, whatever, and leave it looking like it has never been touched. I learned that trick borrowing my uncle's books as a child and worrying that I might wreck them and lose my only source of science fiction. Now it is second nature not to break spines, etc. I've certainly given away books for presents that I have already read.

  9. I understand the impulse to "preread" a book, but I guess my feeling is that I want my own copy if it's a book I love. So, I wouldn't need to read their copy.

I have a hard time reading a book that is intended as a gift. I'm the kind of person who enjoys owning what I have read. If I buy a book and it sparks my interest I may read the first few pages and then purchase the book myself.

  11. I would definitely read a book before I gave it and I usually do read the books that I give my mom. But normally I don't have time to read the books before I give them as gifts! :)

  12. Oh, this just totally cracked me up! I say if the book still looks brand new after you've read it, where's the harm? But I'd be too afraid something would happen to it, so I've never done it. I do however, very often in fact, give books that I can later borrow! (Always keeping the recipient's tastes in mind, of course!)

  13. I once read a book before giving it to my best friend for her birthday. It was a collection of Boondocks comic strips, so I read it really quickly. I told her, and she didn't mind, but we borrow each other's books all the time. When I get my husband a book, I make myself wait until he reads it before I pounce on it. But if he hasn't read it within a year, I go ahead and read it first anyway.

  14. I don't tend to read books before I give them to others. New books tend to have a different feel from ones that have been read, even just once, and so it would be like giving them a used book instead of a new one.
