Once Upon a Time Challenge III

For the third year running I plan on joining Carl's Once Upon a Time Challenge. Since I have been participating in his challenges since the very beginning, I am not about to stop now! The start of this challenge makes me further wish that I wasn't so insanely behind on reviewing books! I will have to see what I can do about that this weekend.
So, this year I am going to go with Quest the Third.
Fulfill the requirements for Quest the First or Quest the Second AND top it off with a June reading of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream OR a viewing of one of the many theatrical versions of the play. Love the story, love the films, love the idea of that magical night of the year and so this is my chance to promote the reading of this farcical love story.
I am going to group it with Quest the First which is
Read at least 5 books that fit somewhere within the Once Upon a Time III criteria. They might all be fantasy, or folklore, or fairy tales, or mythology…or your five books might be a combination from the four genres.
This challenge is so fun! In 2007 I read 12 books for the challenge and won the grand prize! Carl gives out very cool prizes... In 2008 I only read six books... That's rather depressing, but last year was a bad reading year! (I was thinking I read more in 2007, but that must have been the R.I.P. Challenge of either that year or the year before.) Anyway, this year I am not making a list or setting any real goals, but it would be nice to clean off the TBR pile a little and maybe read more than 14 books.

*** Edited to add**** I posted a separate post with reading potentials on it. It could be a LOT longer... Click here to read it!

I am also considering Quest the Fourth:
Read two non-fiction books, essay collections, etc. that treat any one or more of the four genres covered in this challenge.
I have books out from the library right now that would work. I also probably have several on my TBR pile. And, I really haven't read enough non-fiction this year.

Then, there is Short Story Weekends...
This quest involves the reading of one or more short stories that fit within at least one of the four genres during the course of the weekend. Ideally you would post about your short story readings on Sundays or Mondays, but this is not strictly necessary.
Remember how I won the grand prize *cough* two years ago *cough*... Well, there were THREE Robert E. Howard books included that I still haven't read in their entirety. Then, I have J.R.R. Tolkien books that are short story collections. And those are just two choices. I have a lot more, but I have a hard time making myself read all the great short story collections I have. This would be a good excuse to change that!

  1. I think that I'm going to do short story weekends too this time. I have quite a few anthologies just sitting on the shelf collecting dust for way too long. Can't wait to see what you read!!

And congrats on winning the grand prize the first time!!!! Isn't this such a fun challenge?

  3. Chris: Yeah, I have several I could pick from! I am so bad when it comes to short stories!

Susan: lol. I pretty much just said the same thing on your post about our similar decisions. That's too funny! I will think about some books and maybe post a list as I go along. :)

  5. Ah man, I wanna see a list! Sheesh...look at what you've read in less than 3 months so far this year...you could probably read as much for OUaT as the rest of put together. :)

  6. Nymeth: If I pressure myself like that the challenge won't be any fun!

Debi: Okay, that's two votes for a list! I guess I will have to whip one up. :)

  7. Yaay for lists!! and she's (Debi) right - you've read 88 books in less than 3 months! I think my jaw just dropped. So a little wee list of what you might consider reading would be fun for the rest of us to admire!!! no pressure.... :-D

We're doing the same quests! I love this challenge. I keep saying I'm not going to join any more challenges and then I join more. Happy reading!
