Bad Etiquette

There have been a lot of posts lately about why people blog, author pet peeves about bloggers and their reviews, publicity, whether blogs help sales, etc, etc. I had largely stayed out of the debate, but you know what.... I actually have something to say: Be nice to bloggers. They might not be paid to write reviews, but they still have a voice that will carry! So, if you are a 'cranky' author, you are entirely entitled to your opinion, but don't comment on a blog post. Everyone can read it, and really, that would be an example of bad publicity.

That being said, bloggers should have a good reason to be 'cranky', too. If you are going to bad mouth an author, actually have a reason to do so. There are lots of authors that I don't love that other people worship. It's all about personal preference and freedom of speech, right?

Why am I going on about this? See these two posts for much better explanations!

Once Upon a Bookshelf
a Fair Subsitute for Heaven

See, these bloggers, they have a reason for boycotting an author.

I also should point out that it is really late, so hopefully this post actually makes sense! Off to bed with me, now!

  1. I haven't commented much either, but I just had to say "Amen Sister!"

  2. LOL. It does make sense. :) I have to say, that I'm starting to feel a little bad about blogging about it in the first place... but if someone's going to be all "pfft your opinion is wrong!" then I don't want to deal with people they are trying to promote, you know?

  4. not the smartest thing to do by her husband.. but then too.. sometimes we read more into thing then there is, just because of a mood we are in... I remember writing a loooong post once when someone put down bloggers about not being "writers"..but in a way meaning no one should write a blog unless you desire to be a writer or something like that... i went crazy lol..
but he should have said who he was and that there was more than one way to interpet the book..? or something lol

Makes perfect sense to me and it does seem childish, though not as bad as it could possibly have been.

libritouches: Oh, yes, there are worse stories around the blogosphere, that's for sure!

  9. Good post, Kailana. I agree - if I get a nasty response from an author re: an honest review of their book, I won't read them again. It is unprofessional at best, and immature at worst. Likewise, I think we (as reviewers) need to be professional as well. It goes both ways.

I've only had one author write me a personal email where he ranted for two pages after I said I didn't like his book. It only made me more certain I was right with my analysis. I didn't respond to his email and he apparently was satisfied after his rant and didn't write back.

  11. More often than not I find it best not to get into these kind of conversations because rarely does anything worth while come out of it and it is next to impossible sometimes to make a valid argument without someone taking it differently than you meant it and running with it. That said, there have been times when I've let myself get riled up and have had to say something. I almost always regret it though.

  12. Carl: I try to stay out of those types of conversations as much as possible!

  14. I've tried staying away from all the bad etiquette-blogger boycott-snarky authors/publishers posts. Honestly I just don't see the point, sure if a person has experienced something bad it's their right to blog about it, and it's awesome for those people to let everyone else know about it - but when it's being re-blogged on every second blog it begins to feel like a witch-hunt. Much like when the media gets wind of something controversial in politics and that's all you see for weeks on end. Seems like beating a dead horse to me, or maybe I'm just being cranky?

Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

I am so sorry, but I turned anonymous commenting off. I have had it from the very beginning, but that is how the spam is getting by my spam filter at the moment. If it is a big deal I will turn it back on and moderate all comments. I also changed moderation from older than 14 days to older than 7.
