Week in Review (15)

Random Thoughts

It is hard to believe that 100 years ago today the greatest marine disaster of the 20th-century occurred. The Titanic sank off the coast of Newfoundland and people are still caught up in the story today. I was just searching through the Kindle books on Amazon and it is overwhelming how many there are to read about the Titanic. The Titanic graveyards are an hour from here and they were quite the happening place this weekend. The city is responsible for their up-keep, so they were pulling out all the stops in the hopes of a good tourist market. I would judge it was a success judging by the news stories last night. I chose to be a bit quieter and just read books.

Otherwise, it has been a very quiet week at this blog. I only read 2 books and only posted a couple times. I just wasn't in the mood. Hopefully that has passed and I can get back on track around here. I haven't been doing much better at visiting blogs. I did a bit this weekend, but not as much as I would like. Hopefully the mood will pass and I can get back in the swing of things this week. I have all ready finished a book today, so I am off to a good start!

I couldn't help thinking how this my 15th Week in Review of the year and it is the 15th of April. I notice strange things!

Challenge News

My two books didn't count for any challenges....

Weekly Reads

This book just not work for me. I really enjoyed American Born Chinese, but I didn't love The Eternal Smile and this one was even worse. I hope he can get his momentum back. It is unfortunate when your first book is a huge success because then there is a lot of pressure for the next one. (Library)

I am sort of obsessed with Titanic books right now. Ana, who also blogs at Historical Tapestry, mentioned this on Goodreads and I was immediately interested. It was only 1.99 so I bought it yesterday... And then sat down and read it on my computer. So, I heard of it, bought it, and read it all in one day. There are some advantages of the quick nature of e-readers. This book was very interesting. It is a side of the story that is not often explored and it is written very engaging for non-fiction. I am hoping to review it this week at Historical Tapestry. (Personal/E-book)

New Additions

I went to the second-hand book store last night and had some fun. I still had credit left, so I got:
The Cosmic Trilogy by C.S. Lewis (I read book 1 for a blog tour that I am posting tomorrow, so I was thrilled to find the other two.)
A Hard Day's Night by Simon R. Green (I really enjoyed the first three Nightside books, but for page length and my reading speed the are not worth buying new. So, I am collecting them second hand.)
Heir to Sevenwaters by Juliet Marillier (I enjoyed the first 2 books in this series, so thought I should grab this while it was there.
The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan (Amanda bragged this book up and I was going to read it through the library, but I couldn't resist grabbing this copy)
The Little Giant of Aberdeen County by Tiffany Baker (This has been on my list for ages! I decided to grab it when I saw it.)
The Spellman Files by Lisa Lutz (I have heard good things about this series.)
Curse of the Spellmans by Lisa Lutz
Dreamdark: Blackbringer by Laini Taylor (I know I have heard about this book but I couldn't remember if it was positive thoughts or negative... I took a chance.)
The Lost Wife by Alyson Richman (I have heard a lot about this book and thought I would grab a copy for myself.)
Another new addition. Not mine, but it is part of the reason why my reading was slow this week. For all the annoyance we are going to see Mirror Mirror on Tuesday.

  3. I've always been fascinated by the Titanic too. Even more so now that I've been on several cruises and can much more realistically imagine the terror. I think the first book I read about this was when I was a kid called A Night to Remember... I think. (Yes, just looked it up.. written in 1955.) I loved it. The movie, I watch whenever it shows up on TV and I can't turn away. The 3D movie, not sure I can handle it! Oh my.

  4. The bike looks awesome! I love riding with my hubby! I didn't realize about the up keep of the area! How fascinating to have that all happening so close to where you live!

  6. The boy got a bike, huh? Hub just sold one of his and the other is on consignment at the Kawasaki dealership. Makes me really sad but perspective has changed a bit now that we have the babe. Actually more for Scott than for me!

I had no idea that there was a Titanic graveyard! Or that it was so close to you!

  7. I didn't know there was a Titanic graveyard either. That's interesting!

Good idea picking up the Nightside books used. I should probably do that as well, I stopped reading the series after the third one for the same reason. Even though I might have the fourth book hiding in one of my to-be-read piles still.

  8. I'm reading The Spellman Files this week and really enjoying it. I've had The Omnivore's Dilemna on my shelf for YEARS. I keep going back and forth between wanting to know where my food comes from and not wanting to know anything at all. :-)
