R.I.P. VIII

*tap tap tap* Is this thing even on? I blog so rarely nowadays I imagine no one even stops by for a visit; but I always participate in Carl's challenges. It would be wrong of me to not join in for this one. This is the 8th year and I have been there since the beginning. That's a bit crazy, actually! I look forward to some good reading, though. I enjoy this time of the year and the sorts of books that fit this challenge. Here's hoping I can pull it off!

Peril the First:
Read four books, any length, that you feel fit (the very broad definitions) of R.I.P. literature. It could be King or Conan Doyle, Penny or Poe, Chandler or Collins, Lovecraft or Leroux…or anyone in between.

What I Read:
1. Omens by Kelley Armstrong (Completed August 30, 2013)
2. Magic Bites (Kate Daniels Series, Book 1) by Ilona Andrews (Completed September 3, 2013)
I have a collected works for Edgar Allan Poe that I got just for this challenge and still haven't cracked the spine. I hope to read a bit of it. Otherwise, I think I have a couple other short story collections around here that would work. I am really bad at reading short stories at the best of times.
What I Read:
1.

At least for this it is something the guy and I can do together. He watches way more television and movies than I do. We can watch them together.

What I Watched:

1.

And then... I might do this... I really want to, but I am so bad at group reads and I am not sure what happened to my copy of The Historian...

  2. YEARS ago for one of my first RIPs I read a collection of Edgar Allan Poe short stories. Some of them are way out there! I've thought about joining this as I love the event but I'm also thinking about taking it easy with the reading now that I don't have as many reading obligations. Enjoy!

    1. I can't imagine not joining in, but I am bad at reading commitments this year... I might not get much actually read... I have read some Poe off and on over the years but not with any regularity.

  3. I just got Omens today. It looks so good.
You were the one, three years ago, who introduced me to Kelley Armstrong. :)
I like Louise Penny very much, and Poe, of course. Enjoy.

    1. That's wonderful! I am so glad you are reading her. I enjoyed Omens. I was a bit worried I wouldn't, but it grew on me and I am looking forward to more.

  4. Poe! I have a collection of short stories on my shelf that has been there for AGES! I should probably add that to the pile. :)

  6. I have a problem with reading short stories too. But I have several collections of mystery short stories I have been meaning to sample, so maybe I will for this challenge.

  7. Edgar Allan Poe is amazing. I hope you read and enjoy. Course your post has made me want to read Collins now because the Woman in White is also pretty fantastic - not to mention Conan Doyle. No. I will not add any more books - particularly the ones I've already read. I need to focus on the unread TBR.
I look forward to all your reviews.

    1. I will HOPEFULLY review it... The one good thing about a slow reading year is I am not insanely behind like I normally am...

  10. Yaay! I'm so happy you're joining in again. I have to do my post, it was going to be tonight, but we had a storm and I've just got on after it passed, so I'll do it tomorrow. I'm in the mood for lots of ghost stories this year. Please review Omens, I'm really curious about it :-)

  11. Well I'm glad RIP brought you back on the blogging stage for a check in. It would indeed be wrong of you not to take part, very wrong (of course I'm teasing, but it would be sad too since you are one of the 'old timers' now).

Already knocked out a read, eh? I got a jump on this myself with some August RIP reading.

    Wonderful to have you back.

  16. I agree, it's hard to resist RIP! Every year I've participated I thought I should read some Poe, and it hasn't managed to happen. Someday... If you find The Historian, I really enjoyed it, despite the length. (I'm tempted to reread it with the group, but know I won't have time.) Happy RIP reading!

  17. I agree about that wrong feeling if we skip a Carl challenge! I haven't officially signed up for this one yet, and yes, I'm feeling wrong. But I think I'll concentrate on it in Oct. We'll see.

I'm doing Peril on the Screen too! I've only watched The Lost Boys so far, but I've got lots of other plans!!
