Thoughts on Things

  • I love audiobooks. I am doing really well with them lately. I just have one problem: Long chapters. I finished Anne of Green Gables today, so I quickly started The Black Flower for the Literature and War Readalong. I listen to audiobooks on the treadmill mostly. The first chapter of The Black Flower is TWO hours long. I spent the whole thing trying to find a good place to stop. It's easy with shorter chapters, but I am annoyed by long chapters and probably get distracted more from them than other audiobooks. Frankly I am not a big fan of long chapters period. Thoughts?
  • I am all ready feeling like I am in a reading slump. It's terrible! I read so many good, high-paced books at the beginning of the month and now I am just struggling. I hate that! Hopefully I can shake it off this week and get to some more good books.
  • The guy bought drums. He is actually fine playing them, but holy loud. The poor cat doesn't know what is going on. She was hiding in her house until I went looking for her. Now that she has seen what is causing the noise she seems better.
  • We are having a snowstorm. It is really light snow and the wind is blowing it everywhere. A plough finally just went by, but we haven't bothered to tackle the driveway yet. It's cold out anyway, so I am not complaining.
  • I think I might read an entirely different book after getting off here in the hopes I can find something that works for me. I was planning to write a review today, but not in the mood.

For some reason I am unable to listen to audio books. I totally zone and lose where I am :( I wish I could because I would listen in the car on my twice yearly jaunt across country to drop kids off at college. I have been in a reading slump the last couple days. I think I have to read a different genre to clear my "palate".

As to turning of anonymous commenting, that's fine as long as wordpress commenting is still allowed. One blogger has turned off everything except comment as google account and I don't use my google account for anything related to blogging/social media, so I no longer comment on their blog.

I have that problem with audiobooks too! I get really frustrated when I can't find a chapter end to stop on.

  3. A reading slump? No!! I think all you need is a new book to get you out of that. So I hope you find something good on your shelves tonight!

  4. I wish I were an audiobook person. I would definitely get through more books and I like the idea of being able to read while I'm doing other things. My mind wanders though and I end up not hearing a lot before I realize I'm not listening. I get soooo distracted by whatever is visual and if I close my eyes to listen I fall asleep!

  5. I've decided life is too short to continue reading books that are doing nothing for me. It grieves me if I've spent good money on them but it's not like I've wasted a fortune. Library books just go straight to the going back pile. Hope you find something to suit your mood.

  6. Drums? Does it prevent you from reading? Because I can imagine how it might. Is he going to teach you to play too? I have never played drums a day in my life, but whenever I see a drumset I want to.

  7. I feel you on the long chapters. No solution there, I think. I usually just wait for the end of a sentence or dialogue.

  8. I seem to get more books read via audio than print these days. It's cold here but, thankfully, the snow has missed us so far this winter. *knock on wood*

  9. I don't especially like long chapters in audio books either. Since I am usually only able to listen in 15 to 30 increments, the longer chapters have to be broken up--and I hate that. It's caused me to avoid listening to my audio books for longer than I'd like because I don't want to start a chapter and not be able to finish it until the following week when I am able to listen again.

Sometimes I have a hard time settling into a book after reading several fast paced books in a row. Especially if the book I'm trying to read is a a slower one. I hope your slump isn't really a slump and is more of a stall! Slumps are never fun.

  10. Long chapters in audiobooks are difficult. I just tend to stop and go though as I need. It can make it difficult to remember just what happened, but hitting the rewind by 30 seconds button usually is enough to help me remember.

No slumps allowed! Pick up something you absolutely adore and re-read it. Or choose something from one of your go-to authors. That should help you get out of a slump. Good luck!

  11. Another reading slump?! Oh no! I hope you can find a book that catches and keeps your attention.

  12. Huh - I never ever notice or pay attention to chapters in audio books. I listen and when I have to stop, I stop. Makes no difference to me where in the reading I am when I take a break. Of course, I'm same with books, too. SO you can already hear me say this, right? Get over it. :D

  13. If nothing else does, hopefully comics in February will banish that reading slump!

  14. I hope that you can find a book that can get your grove going again..:) Good luck to you on your quest to get over your slump.

I know the feeling sometimes with chapters in audiobooks, because they seem to DRAG on and on sometimes. I always have an audiobook in my car to and from work.

  15. I'm like Care - I don't think I've ever really noticed long chapters or short ones on audiobook. I read on my commute, so I often stop in an abrupt and somewhat random pace. I can see how it would be annoying, though! I guess it motivated you to stay on the treadmill longer :-)

  16. I love audiobooks. The chapter thing doesn't bother me too much. I tend to just stop it wherever it is in the book.

  17. I tend to turn off my audio whenever -- even mid-sentence! Aren't there pads you can put on drums to help mute them???

  18. I'm so bad at audiobooks! I should just put them in my car and quit wasting time while "only" driving.
