Week in Review (5)

Random Thoughts

Well, January was not my best reading month ever, but it started out really good. I am not sure what happened. I lost momentum about halfway through. January has always been one of my slowest reading months, but I always thought it was because I read so much in the months leading up to it that I got kind of burned out. Since 2013 was a really, really slow reading year that doesn't really fly this time around. Here we are in February, though, and I will hopefully get to some good stuff! I am planning a graphic novel evening if all works out. I will do an actual wrap-up for January probably tomorrow. I want to get back in the habit of wrapping up my months.

Lucy Maud Montgomery Year
Well, I started Kilmeny of the Orchard this week but haven't got very far into it. It is technically not my next read, that would be Anne of Avonlea, but where I am listening to that one on audio and have a couple audio commitments to get to first, I decided to keep the momentum going. I also started the next short story collection.

Graphic Novel Year
I kicked off Graphic Novel month with Runaways - Volume 2: Teenage Wasteland. I like this series, but it is not blowing me away. My library doesn't have it and I am not sure I want to buy them all... We will see what happens...

Other Reading Projects

I don't have anything to say on this topic, but if I leave it out I won't remember to do it when I do have something to say!

Challenge News
The Black Flower by Howard Bahr counts for the Audiobook Challenge and the Historical Fiction Challenge.

The Runaways - Volume 2: Teenage Wasteland counts for the Graphic Novel Challenge.

Audiobooks
I finished The Black Flower and was surprised by how much I liked it. I also listened to the short story The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. I got for free on Audible and will review it next week. Currently I am listening to The Splendour Falls by Susanna Kearsley. This is my very first review copy audio! It is also a reread for me that might make me want to reread all of Kearsley's books...

Currently Reading

Abaddon's Gate by James. S.A. Corey
What Makes This Book so Great by Jo Walton
Kilmeny of the Orchard by Lucy Maud Montgomery
Thorn by Intisar Khanani

Weekly Reading

I am going to have lots to say about this one... I hate reviewing second books in trilogies because I hate having too many spoilers... I have heard that there is no guaranteed book 3 if this book doesn't do well. Can everyone go buy this book and book 1, please?

I will review this next week.

Fun, but nothing amazing. I haven't reviewed any graphic novels yet this year. I have to decide on a strategy!

  1. Kilmeny of the Orchard is okay - definitely not her strongest but it's short. You know the only graphic novel I've ever read was French Milk and I don't think I really got it. I'll be really interested to see your reviews to see if I can find one that grabs me!

  2. Like you, January wasn't a great reading month compared to past months. Happy February reading

  3. It still sounds like you are fitting some good reading in so that is an accomplishment :) I'm also planning on participating in Graphic Novels month, and I already have the 1st Walking Dead graphic novel ready to go. I'm also hoping to get back to the Fables series since I read (and enjoyed) the first two but then never continued on. I can't wait to see what you read because I'm sure you will add to my TBR list :)

  4. I hope your reading picks up! I've started reading for Comic February and so far, I'm off to a good start. I just need to find another series to start. Love the cover of Shadowplay, might pick it up. Happy reading.

I'll have to keep an eye on your LM Montgomery project. I've enjoyed the 2 Anne Shirley books I've read by her but haven't had a chance to read anything else yet. Happy reading!

  7. Have fun with graphic novel month. I should participate, if only to encourage me to read the couple that have been lingering on my shelf.

  8. Reviewing any books in a series is tough, especially if you feel the same way about each of them. Have a great week in books!

  9. I love seeing wrap-up posts and I think I was so excited January was over that I forgot to do one myself! ha,ha... The month wasn't so bad but January can always be a bit of a downer after all the Christmas excitement.

Hope you read lots of great stuff this month!

  10. I have been hearing a lot about What Makes This Book so Great by Jo Walton and I really want to get my hands on it. I am curious to know how you are enjoying it?

Also I had been wanting to read Laura Lam's books for a while, so I just went and added the first book to my Kobo cart! I need to fill my ereader for our next trip and Pantomime sounds just right for it!

I've been meaning to listen to Anne of Avonlea since I loved Anne of Green Gables in Audio!
    Good luck with your challenges
