2016 in Review - A Mid Year Reflection

I found this challenge on Instagram where you post your pics as a Mid-Year Review. I decided to borrow some of the questions as a sort of Mid-Year blog post. We will see how this goes!

1. First Read of the Year

2. Favourite Female Character

If I had to pick, the three that pop to mind immediately are Blue from The Raven Cycle, Karou from Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy, and Georgia from The Newsflesh Trilogy. Oh, and I totally forgot Delilah Bard from the Shades of Magic trilogy!

3. Favourite Male Character
Well, Deadpool is probably my favourite Marvel character in all of my Marvel reading this year... Charley from Flowers for Algernon has long been a favourite character. And, I really like Atticus so far from The Iron Druid series. And, Kell from the Shades of Magic trilogy.

4. Shortest Book Read
Not counting comics.

5. Longest Book Read

This surprised me and was a tad bit inaccurate because I listened to this, not read it.

6. Beautiful Cover
I wish it wasn't a ridiculously overpriced novella right now, or I would own it in a physical copy just because such a great cover!

7. Most Read Genre

Fantasy. Who is surprised?

8. Favourite Side Characters
Oberon from The Iron Druid Chronicles. Zuzana from Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy.

9. Book That Made you Cry
Maybe not as much this time, but in the past definitely. Now I expect things, but that is not to say they are any less depressing...

10. New Favourite Author

Laini Taylor. Mira Grant. V.E. Schwab. Maggie Stiefvater. Sylvain Neuvel. Kevin Hearne. Laura Ruby.

11. Book You Didn't Finish
I thought I would love this, but so boring...

12. Best Sequel/Finale You Read
The best sequels I have read from series that I started prior to 2016, are Volume 3 in Wayward and Sex Criminals.

13. Favourite Read of 2016 So Far

My favourite books:

I loved this book! And the sequel, which is also a favourite for the year! I all ready have book 3 pre-ordered...

This book was an excellent way to learn even more about fantasy... It is my favourite genre after all, so found it really great!

Love Terry Pratchett. I thought his collected essays were a wonderful way to spend my mornings! I wish there were more!

I love The Princess Bride and Cary Elwes. This was written in such a readable manner. I enjoyed my time with it!

I can't believe it took me so long to read this series! I love Karou and the world that Laini Taylor has created in this trilogy! (I include volume 2 in this list of favourites, too. I haven't read volume 3 yet.)

Feed and the sequel are so good. The audios are awesome. The books themselves are page turners. I am sure book 3 will join their ranks for the second half of the year!

Love this series! Atticus and Oberon and all the characters they come across are wonderful. I will hopefully read more of this series for the second half of the year!

I decided to try this series and now I am caught up and cannot wait for the next one. Lazarus really should have been on my list of favourite female characters!

I will be the first to admit that short story collections are not my normal thing, but I loved Amber Sparks. I will hopefully read her other collection in the second half of the year!
One of my anticipated reads of 2016 that definitely lived up to it!
I can't believe it took me so long to get this book. What a wonderful book!
I have been meaning to read this series forever and I finally read all 4 books this year! I loved them all and am so happy I finally read this.

I enjoyed Scott McCloud's non-fiction, but this fiction offering from him was excellent. I can't wait to see what he does next!
I have been meaning to read this forever! When I grabbed the audio out of my TBR, I didn't even know what the book was about. It was a great reentry into audio listening and a great book overall. I am hoping to read Carey's new book the second half of the year!

Anyway that knows me, knows that I love fairy tale retellings. So, no one should be surprised this is on my list. I have been meaning to try the author forever and cannot wait to read more by her!

This was a page turner. I cannot wait for the sequel!!

1. Series You Want to Start
I honestly don't want to start any. lol I have so many on the go that July is standalone-reads month!

2. 2016 Release You Haven't Read

um, many? But, the ones I actually own are:

3. Most Anticipated Sequel

4. Standalone You Want to Read

5. Series You Want to Finish

6. New To You Author You Want to Read

7. Fantasy Book You Want to Read

8. Sequel You Want to Read

9. Most Anticipated Release for the Rest of the Year

10. Anticipated Finale to a Series

Nothing out the rest of the year finishes a series, so I will go with this:

11. Book You Want to Reread

12. Book You Need to Read by the End of the Year

Um, see above! lol All of these apply.

  1. Fun little survey. If I had time to blog I'd participate. I want to read so many of the books you've read and the ones you want to read. It's so hard not getting overwhelmed.

  3. So many good books! I loved Mira Grant's FEED. I've got my fingers crossed I'll be seeing GEMINA for the Aurealis Awards, as it will be eligible for the category I'm judging. Which means I'll have to read ILLUMINAE first!

  5. Yayyyy always so glad to see Tell the Wolves I'm Home showing up on people's best-of lists. I was crazy about that book, and it didn't get the kind of attention I expected when it first came out. Slowly but surely I will badger everyone into reading it. :p
