But, really, folks... Flowers for Algernon. I reread it this year and have read it a few times before.... I love that book!

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?
All the Birds in the Sky by Charlie Jane Anders. Not sure what it was this book, but it didn't click with me as I expected it to.

3. Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read?
Free the Darkness by Kel Kade. I heard about the author in a random audio newsletter and grabbed it on audio. I absolutely loved this book and was shocked to discover it was self-published. I probably would not have read it if I knew that before I tried it, but the narrator is awesome anyway and I am excited about the sequel.

4. Book You “Pushed” The Most People To Read (And They Did)?
Did I push anything? Anyone read anything because of me?

5. Best series you started in 2016? Best Sequel of 2016? Best Series Ender of 2016?
I started so many series in 2016. lol If I HAD to pick I would say Lazarus for graphic novel (but I could change that if I think too much about the question) and Shades of Magic for novel form. The new Volume of Saga. Love Saga! The only series ender would be The Raven King... I didn't love it, but it was really readable.

6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2016?
I can't even narrow that down. There were a lot and they were all awesome.

7. Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone?
Sunstone. This graphic novel series is definitely outside of my normal zone.

8. Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year?
A Gathering of Shadows. Although, while I didn't love The Raven Cycle quite as much as others, I did fly through the series. And I flew through the Newsflesh series on audio.

9. Book You Read In 2016 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year?
The graphic novels. I may reread some before I start new volumes.

No wonder I put this off so long, these questions are always so hard to narrow down. lol Probably Kell and Delilah Bard from V.E. Schwab's books.

The Comet Seekers by Helen Sedgwick

13. Most Thought-Provoking/ Life-Changing Book of 2016?
The Promise of Canada made me think a lot. I am not sure if it was life-changing, though.

um, a lot of them? lol Feed by Mira Grant. Oh, and Where'd You Go, Bernadette.

I really should record this stuff.

The Fireman was the longest. The shortest is unclear because I recorded some single issues when a collected version was not available on Goodreads.

Illumine and Gemini. Lots of twists and turns in those books.

I never know what to answer for this question.

This is definitely the friendships in The Raven Cycle. It was my favourite part of that quartet!

The Promise of Canada by Charlotte Gray. I really like her nonfiction.

21. Best Book You Read In 2016 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure:
Probably Illuminae. I honestly read it because it was on so many best of lists in 2015. I was not disappointed!

22. Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2016?
I am not sure because I am in the minority and don't think like that...

23. Best 2016 debut you read?
The Comet Seekers. I loved that book and hope her follow-up will be amazing.

24. Best Worldbuilding/Most Vivid Setting You Read This Year?
Nevernight. I loved that book and if you haven't experienced it yourself, you should!

25. Book That Put A Smile On Your Face/Was The Most FUN To Read?
There were a lot of funny comics this year. I really enjoyed Hellcat. She is kick-ass, but funny. And I always love Deadpool!

26. Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2016?
Honestly, I don't think there was anything. That was not my idea of a good book in 2016...

27. Hidden Gem Of The Year?
Free the Darkness by Kel Kade.

Again, I just was not in the right frame of mind for this sort of stuff...

29. Most Unique Book You Read In 2016?
The Marvels by Brian Selznick.

30. Book That Made You The Most Mad (doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t like it)?
Probably the Newsflesh series. It might be about Zombies folks, but it is soooo plausible. Oh, and The Girl with all the Gifts. It paints an interesting picture of the world.

Random Thoughts

~ I reread way more books this year than I normally do. My interest in cleaning up my unread graphic novel series and audiobooks are why.

~ I feel like this year was a better reading year than 2015, but I read more books in 2015. Interesting.

~ Eowyn Ivey was on my best of list in 2015 and 2016. She needs to write more books!

~ Deadpool put a smile on my face in 2015, too! I love Deadpool.

~ Do you know I only read 60 books total in 2014? 

~ Fantasy is always my most common genre.

~ I read Laura Lam in 2014 and volume 3 in her trilogy is finally coming this year!!!

~ I always say that if I reread anything it will be comics and I am usually mostly correct!

~ I reread Flowers for Algernon in 2013 and again in 2016. Have you read it? I love that book!

~ I stalled on this looking back because I found some old posts about Casey... So, that's that.

Looking Back

Holy 2016. I am kind of relieved that it is the last month of it. I am hoping 2017 will be a better year overall. I took a step back this month. I just concentrated on audiobooks and graphic novels. I just wanted a low-key month. It worked well for me!

Week in Review - Week 1

Life

Happy New Year!! I am back with my first Sunday post of 2017 after taking a week off from blogging. My 2017 in the first hour or so started off fine, but then about 2 this morning the kitten had some bathroom issues and had a bath. I am now thinking that my 2017 started after that fun event. lol I really do not want steam cleaning rugs and bathing cats in the early hours of the morning to set my tone for what I am hoping will be a better year than last. On the plus side, I will likely remember this New Year above most of the others! lol

At least she is cute, right?

I am hoping to do some wrap-up type posts this week. Then, I am not sure where the blog is going this year. I am basically looking at it like I did last year and aiming to blog every Sunday. If I blog more than that, great! It is no pressure blogging. Some things I am thinking about are how many audios I will get through this year now that they are a more central part of my reading then they were when I started out 2016. (Although, to end out 2016 my iPod died and I had to get a new one because, well, I had over 3 years with my last one and it is easier than my phone. Hoping that will arrive next week. In the meantime, I have it on my phone, though!) And, I really really want to read all of my graphic novels that are still unread. And, I want to concentrate on my TBR as much as possible this year. We will see if any of that turns out to go well! The other things I am thinking about this year are using my real camera more instead of always relying on my phone and to get back into sending postcards. We will see how it goes! 

I just know that 2016 was not my favourite year. I am still pretty devastated that we lost Casey. She was just the best kitty and I have no idea what happened to her. I am still hoping she got adopted by another family and is living a great life that she may return from one day. If not, I try not to think about what could have happened to her. Chloe is great, but she is just not Casey. There will never be another Casey. But it is has been over 3 months now. The chances of her reappearing are still plausible, but more and more unlikely with every passing day. But, maybe she will come back and make 2017 all that much better!

Currently Reading

I had hoped when I sat down to read this post that I would have decided on that oh, so important 'first read of 2017'. There are many books calling my name and my tablet is charging. I am sure there will be reading today. I just have to decide what!

Audiobook

This was supposed to be my last audio of 2016, but because of the whole iPod disaster, it is my first audio of 2017 instead. It is a really well-done audio and I am really looking forward to seeing how it ends.

Weekly Reading

Updraft (Bone Universe, Book 1) ~ After checking out a novella by Fran Wilde earlier this year, I decided that I needed to see what her longer works were like. (Plus, this was narrated by the same person that did Daughter of Smoke & Bone). It was a really good start to a new fantasy series! I have to say that I read a lot of good fantasy in 2016 and discovered some really great authors. I am intrigued by the world and cannot wait to see how she develops it with book 2. Strongly recommended!

A Christmas Carol ~ Then I decided to check out A Christmas Carol narrated by Tim Curry. It was really good, but didn't amaze me like I expected. According to Goodreads I have never read A Christmas Carol before, but I know that I have at least twice before. I thought the audio would be a better experience, but while I love Tim Curry in general, this didn't blow me away. I was disappointed about that, but still had fun with it. And, the story is always good. Recommended!

Merry Christmas to those that celebrate! It seems silly to be posting this on Christmas day, but I had to make it to week 52 with posting every Sunday. So, here I am! I am hoping to accomplish the same thing in 2017. I am finding I am pretty busy and am behind in blogging in general, so I am going to actually take the week off and then will be back with the first Week in Review of 2017 and will look back on December and 2016 in general. I think I have blogged too much lately and need to step away.

Y: The Last Man - Volumes 5 to 10 ~ I am so happy that I reread and read this series in 2016! I started it in 2012 and apparently just never got around to the rest of the volumes, so I settled in and read straight through. It was perfect for the 'end of the world' type year that 2016 was... And, Vaughan is always awesome! If you haven't checked this series out, I definitely recommend it! One of the best I have read!

Random Thoughts

Here we are at week 51. That means that as long as I get my post up next Sunday, I managed to blog every Sunday this year. That was one of my goals for 2016, so, yay. lol Later in the year I started blogging more in general, but my goal was only once a week. I hope that I can maintain the blogging in 2017, even if it is just the Sunday posts. That also depends on my reading in 2017. I didn't slump that much this year, but I find my reading can be really good one year and then really quiet the next year. Hopefully audios will keep me from entirely vanishing. I know I am hardly reading this month, so hard to say what that will mean for January.

Weekly Reading

The Crown's Game ~ Someone on Litsy mentioned this was a daily deal for Kindle and that they really liked it. I read the description and decided it definitely sounded worth checking out. I amazingly read it almost right away, too! I have to admit that I really liked it. A fantasy set against a Russian background about two magicians competing to be the court enchanter. Strong female characters, interesting male characters... I am really looking forward to the sequel. Recommended!

All the Birds in the Sky ~ This was a 2016 release that I was really curious about, so when it was in a recent sale, I finally grabbed a copy. And, now, I really just cannot put my finger on why I didn't love it. It was good, but not as good as I was anticipating it to be. The narrator wasn't bad or anything, but maybe I should have read it instead? I guess there were just other books this year that were better.

Y: The Last Man - Volumes 1 to 4 - So, according to Goodreads I have only read the first two Volumes in this series. I am pretty sure I have read further, but I am not always the best at remembering to record my reading. Some years are better than others! I really love it and Brian Vaughan is always really good. So, I am determined to read them all over the next bit and then I can say for sure I have read them all! Strongly recommended!

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

~ I am a bit of the way into The Story Thieves by James Riley. I heard about it on a blog and it sounded fun and it was a recent daily deal. I am liking it so far, but I am early in.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY LISTENING TO?

~ I stared Updraft by Fiona Wilde yesterday. It is really good so far. I read a novella by her earlier this year and really wanted to see what her longer stuff was like. It helped that the book was narrated by the same person that did Daughter of Smoke & Bone, which I really enjoyed earlier this year.

WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH?

~ I have finished two things recently... The Crown's Game as an e-book and All the Birds in the Sky as an audio. I really liked The Crown's Game and cannot wait for the sequel. I liked All the Birds in the Sky, but didn't love it in the way that I had hoped. Maybe I should have read it instead of listening...

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU WILL READ NEXT?

~ I think I am really just planning my reading for 2017. The month is busy and I am just taking it as it goes. In January I am sure I will want to read everything... I kind of have some projects that I would like to accomplish next year, but I suck at reading lists.

~ I am having a quiet reading month and kind of expected it. I started The Crown's Game by Evelyn Skye earlier this week and I am really liking it so far. I just haven't really been sitting down to read... Maybe before the week is out I will get to settle in and finish it!

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY LISTENING TO?

~ All the Birds in the Sky by Charlie Jane Anders. This is one of the 2016 books I really wanted to read, so I grabbed an audio and now sneaking it in before 2016 ends. It is really quite good so far, but I am still early in only having started it yesterday.

WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?

~ Since my last post for this, I have finished two audiobooks. Who am I? lol The first was Where'd You Go, Bernadette and was a really fun listen that I have been meaning to get to for ages. The other was Free the Darkness by Kel Kade. For some reason I loved this book and just flew through it. I am hesitant to recommend it after reading other reviews of it simply because I understand why people didn't like it. But, I did and I am excited for the sequel, which I also grabbed a copy of and hope to get to soon. Then, I just read comics. I really enjoyed Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat on Marvel Unlimited. I look forward to more in that series. And then I checked out Volume 2 of Sunstone. That is so not my normal genre at all, but I don't mind them and have Volume 3 here to read soon.

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU WILL READ NEXT?

~ When I downloaded All the Birds in the Sky onto my iPod, I also downloaded Mort(e). So, that is likely what is up next. It only wasn't up now because I got that as part of a sale, while I used a credit for All the Birds in the Sky. Actual reading is looking like comics unless my mood changes!

This Is How We Read 

I have read about 293 books this year. My Goodreads says more because sometimes I had to count single volumes of comics instead of the collected editions like I do on my blog.

Most of what I read this year falls in the fantasy category in some way.

I listened to more audio than I normally do. I think I am at 34 for the year and it was partway through the year before I got back into audios. I am hoping to listen to even more in 2017.

I read a lot of graphic novels both off of my shelves, on Scribd, and through Marvel Unlimited. I did not meet my goal of having read all of the graphic novels in my house, though. I need to do that in 2017. There really are not that many I still have to get to...

If I don't count graphic novels, my most read author this year was Mira Grant. I read 4 books under her name and 1 under Seanan McGuire, her other writing name. I think Maggie Stiefvater would come in second because I read 3 books by her. 

I managed to finish a few series this year which is always a plus. There are many others that I am starting to wonder if I will ever finish...

This is How we Blog

I have the most up and down blogging style ever. The only reason I have blogged this much in the last few months is because I have started doing so many 'themed' days. If I didn't know roughly what I was posting each day, I would have likely done one post a week and that's it. 

I don't pressure myself. My goal for blogging was to do my Week in Review post every Sunday and I have accomplished that as of right now. Anything else is just an added bonus.

I am not really technical, I really need to do something about my sidebars, so the only program I really use is Canva to make the graphics I use here and there. Otherwise, I just write up posts and stick random pictures off my computer on them.

The book I'm most looking forward to reading this Holiday season...

I honestly do not read that many Christmas novels. So, I grabbed one off my shelves this week: The Walnut Tree by Charles Todd. It has been a while since I read Charles Todd, so figured it was time to get to some of my unread books by him (well, them, as it is really a mother/son team).

Top Ten New-To-Me Authors I Read for the First Time in 2016

Helen Sedgwick - This is her debut, but it was one of my favourite reads of the year and I am looking forward to more from her in the future!

Mira Grant - I have been meaning to read her forever and finally read 4 books by her this year, plus one more under Seanan McGuire. All were pretty great and I look forward to exploring her more!

Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff - I really enjoyed Illuminae and Gemini. I also read Nevernight by Kristoff on his own and am excited about the sequel.

Michael J. Sullivan - After wanting to forever, I finally read Sullivan with his most recent novel. I have another one of his trilogies to check on via audio thanks to Audible sales, so hoping to get to him over the winter. And then the sequel to this will be out next year.

M.R. Carey - Based on this book, I am intrigued on more from Carey. That being said, I still haven't got around to getting a copy of the new book. oops!

V.E. Schwab - This book and the sequel were two of my favourite reads of the year. I really must get to some of her back list and cannot wait for book 3!

Amber Sparks - I am not a huge short story reader, but I have loved Amber Sparks so far. Hopefully she tries for a novel one day.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie - This should be required reading. It was about time I checked this author out!

Carol Rifka Brunt - Another important novel that I am glad I finally got to this year. Look forward to more from this author, too!

Geneviere Valentine - I have been meaning to read Valentine forever. This book made me curious about all over her back list and look forward to where she goes next!

I think December is going to be audiobooks and graphic novels. It just seems to be where my head is. I have lots of other things going on this month, so at least with audiobooks I can multi-task! In January there will likely be snow and the excitement of a new start to the year, so I will get back to my TBR then. That could change. Moods, you know how they are...

The Book of the Unnamed Midwife ~ I listened to this on audio. It was kind of a whim listen and I am glad I took a chance on it. It was a different take on the post-apocalyptic reads out there right now. And, I think more believable than some of them that are popular right now. It definitely made me think about things and how the world would react if the events came to pass. It also talks about feminism and women. Recommended!

Patsy Walker A.K.A. Hellcat ~ I am a bit behind on my Marvel comic reading, but this is one I was curious about and it was a lot of fun! I am glad I got a chance to check it out. I am looking forward to more in the series. Recommended!

Where'd You Go, Bernadette ~ I have been meaning to check this out forever. I am so glad I did the audio because it was a fun listen! I actually listened to it really quickly for me. I am getting better with multi-tasking and listening to audio. It means a lot more listening time than I had ever managed before. If you ever wondered why Bernadette was missing and where she went, this is the time to check it out and on audio. Strongly Recommended!

Spider-Women ~ A crossover with the Spider-women of the Marvel universe. I think it is fun that there is Spider-Woman, Silk, and Spider-Gwen on the run at the moment and they got a series together. Many of the famous comic book heroes are men, so I hope this wave of women grows larger! Recommended!

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl - Volume 1 ~ And then there is Squirrel Girl! She is so fun and I enjoy that she even exists. It is kind of an usual mixture of girl and squirrel. But, I suppose spiders would have seemed unusual before Spider-Man was so popular. She gets into lots of adventures in this volume and it is so fun to visit with her and her friends! Recommended!

Looking Back

Well, we got a cat... She is very cute, but there are disadvantages of going back in the kitten years. She plays with our feet when we are sleeping and will not stay out of the Christmas tree. It is an adventure all over again! My reading was kind of quiet, but that is honestly not new for November. Hoping December is a great month to end out the year!

5 Popular Books Worth the Hype

1. | I actually read Illumiae and Gemina in 2016 after hearing so much about Illuminae in 2015. They were both definitely worth the read!

2. | The Nightingale was one of those 2015 books that I saw everywhere. I finally got a chance to read it a couple months ago and it was really good! I got a bit tired of WWII books for a while there, but this was worth trying them again for.

3. | The Fifth Season won the Hugo Award this year, so it was definitely buzzed about. I read it and loved it and actually bought the audiobook in the recent Audible sale because I want to reread it at some point. I am hoping to get to the sequel before the year is out or early next year.

4. | The Girls was definitely buzzed about this year and I amazingly bought it this year and read it this year. While maybe not the best book I read this year, I am still really happy that I read it and think it deserves the attention it has received.

5. | The follow-up to The Snow Child was so well done! Eowyn Ivey is an amazing author and I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next!

Is there an album or movie you like to listen to or watch first?

Not really. My music tends to move in the direction of whatever is on my computer for my first listen of the year and then branch out as December gets going. As to movies, I make sure to watch Muppet Christmas Carol before the month is over. That is about all the planning that I do for that.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

My actual reading has been quiet the last few days. Just haven't had time to pick up a book and settle in with it. I am technically reading The Queen of the Blood by Sarah Beth Durst. I am liking it so far and hopefully will get some time to settle in with it soon!

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY LISTENING TO?

I have started exploring my Christmas present audio books! I went with Where'd You Go, Bernadette as my first listen and am almost done. I actually own this book in paperback, but had heard the audio was good... And, it is. So, I won't get mad at myself for buying something I all ready own. At least it will soon be off my TBR!

WHAT DID YOU RECENTLY FINISH READING?

Last week I had so much to talk about... This week, I have finished The Book of the Unnamed Midwife on audio. It was good for a splurge that I had not even heard of before. It is a twist on the typical end of the world type stuff and actually touches on gender and sexuality a lot. I liked how it was not like the other books out there and it actually made me think about issues that are presented in the book. If I had to guess, I would say she read The Handmaid's Tale.

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU WILL READ NEXT?

That is always the question... I have so many books that I wanted to get to this year, and now here we are the last month of the year and I am reading so slowly. December is always a busy month, so we will see how things play out!
