Twilight - Stephanie Meyer [August/06]

This month started out good, but I have gotten rather lax in my blogging. I have been lax in my reading too. I hardly read when I have time off work because there are so many other things I want to do. Anyways, I recently finished Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. It is a young adult book that I know a lot of people in the blogger community have read at one point or time, and if they haven't, they should! I thought it was very enjoyable!

From the flap:

I'd never given much thought to how I would die- I'd had reason enought in the last few months - but even if I had, I would not have imagined it like this... Surely it was a good way to die, in the place of something else, someone I loved. Noble, even. That ought to count for something.

When Isabella Swan moves to the gloomy town of Forks and meets the mysterious, alluring Edward Cullen, her life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. With his porcelain skin, golden eyes, mesmerizing voice, and supernatural gifts, Edward is both irresistible and impenetrable. Up until now, he has managed to keep his true identity hidden, but Bella is determined to uncover his dark secret.

What Bella doesn't realize is the closer she gets to him, the more she is putting herself and those around her at risk. And, if might be too late to turn back...

Deeply seductive and extraordinarily suspenseful, Twilight will have readers riveted right until the last page is turned.

I have been reading a lot of the vampireish novels this year. This is one of my favourites. It is a more natural setting to vampire life. The vampires live relatively like everyday people. At least this band of vampires do. Bella and Edward meet at school, it is a year where the eternal 17-year-old and his 4 brothers and sisters decide to go down the school route this year. They are outcast, both by choice and how the school responds to their eccentric natures. But Bella and Edward find themselves drawn to each other from the very start.

This is their story, and it is more than a vampire story. It is a story of adolescent life, where you are coming from two very different backgrounds and have to make things work. They a very interesting relationship from the start. I mean, it is hard to be a mortal with a vampire because, well, although these particular vampires try not to suck human blood, they can not help wanting to sometimes. It leads this story into interesting angles.

It is enjoyable to read, and I cannot wait until the sequel is released in a few weeks. It will be interesting to see where this story goes from here. I have also been told that if the story does well, it is going to be a series! I hope the sequels are as good as this first one!

4.5/5

  3. Twilight's one of my favorites. It's not a literary, deep thinking type book, but it just really holds your interest.

BTW, it just became available to purchase at Amazon.com yesterday.

Also, she's in the process of editing the 3rd book in the sequel, Eclipse. It will be released in 2007. (Her $750k contract was for a 3-book deal.)

Finally, did you know she re-wrote Twilight but this time from Edward's perspective? Go to this link to read about it; scroll down to the "Midnight Sun" link to read the 1st chapter:

  4. No, Twilight is not very deep, but enjoyable. That is interesting that she rewrote Twilight from Edward's point of view.

I guess I was wrong about it being more than 3 books. Ah, well. I ordered book 2. It is due to arrive in early September. Even if it was out before I always get enough books for free shipping, so that pushes things back. :)

  5. On her website, Stephenie Meyer definitely says that she has no intention of stopping at three books.

  6. Hmmm, I've gone back and forth about whether I want to read this book. Perhaps I should give it a go! I really enjoy YA fiction, but am not so much a fantasy reader.

  7. It was an enjoyable read. While it has vampires in it, and of course the vampires have some special abilities, it takes place in a small town. Teens are the main characters. I suppose in order to decide you need to think if you would mind reading a vampire book, moreso than a fantasy.

  10. Well, I used to be quite into vampire tales - I even have a bat tattoo, heh. I still read them if the story itself is well written (a lot of vampire stuff is pure schlock, IMO).

OK, I deleted my other comment since I couldn't edit it, but I didn't know it would still sort of show up or I would have just made another comment - so, sorry about that!

Anywhoo, I just saw that you are planning to read 'A Great and Terrible Beauty' and just wanted to say that I loved that book, and it has fantasy elements, so I'm not totally opposed to the genre. :-)

  12. Just wanted to say that the vampire aspect of Twilight is quite different than your ordinary vampire books--so don't be put off by that. I've never read a vampire book before, and frankly this one has none of the usual elements of 'vampirism' (not sure if that's a word!). I would consider Twilight to be more of a romance/suspense novel than anything else. BTW, I went to her book signing in Seattle and she talks exactly like Bella--very articulate and funny.

I tried to listen to the audiobook of Libba Bray's Great & Terrible Beauty but I absolutely hated the reader. I will give it another try, this time with the book itself.

  13. I loved Twilight so much I've read it twice since December already. I can't wait for the new one to come out. I can't put my finger on what it is about it...probably the attraction between Bella and Edward. You can't help but fall in love with Edward. Did you know, they are supposedly making a movie as well? MTV Films bought the rights, I hope they make it!

  14. This book sounds great- I am going to request it from the library today. Although I don't enjoy all fantasy, I do enjoy some and I love young adult fiction. Like the vampire theme too. Thanks for the recommendation!
