Jack of Fables Volume 8: The Fulminate Blade by Bill Willingham & Company

Jack of Fables Volume 8: The Fulminate Blade by Bill Willingham & Company

Completion Date: February 11, 2011
Reason for Reading: To Carry on with the Series.
With Jack Horner, former star of JACK OF FABLES, permanently transformed into a dragon, Vertigo reboots the series with a new hero, Jack Frost.

The world in which this story takes place is the world in which Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers lived, only thousands of years later. All that remains is superstition and feudalism and all of the old technology is regarded as magic now. Jack seeks the magic blade which will defeat the Giant King. But of course nothing is as it seems since the good guys always reveal themselves to be evil in the end.
Anyone that reads this blog with any regularity knows that I LOVE this series and its companion series, Fables. I get insanely excited when a release date arrives. I think I probably like Fables the best, but I still really really like this series. One thing with me is that I never read the descriptions of books ahead of time, so I had no idea what this book was even about. It was a fun change of pace that it was about Jack Frost in Jack Horner's absence. Obviously I imagine he is not gone forever, despite what they may say about him being a dragon permanently. People like him too much to be gone forever.

The thing for me is that Jack is not my favourite character. Babe the bull is. I love his little segments. They are used to break up the story arches and they are so funny! You never know what he is going to think next and he is always in random locations. Plus, he is cute! It was brilliant figuring out something to do with him and then carrying it on throughout the series. Obviously I enjoyed more from Jack Frost, but Babe is my first love. I didn't even miss Jack Horner because he was included and outshines the other characters anyway. Babe, I mean.

Once again this was a great edition to the series and the artwork was fantastic! I can't wait until July when Jack returns again!

  1. Rich just got me the first three of these for my birthday. :D And, of course, I am very excited to start them. (It is okay to, despite the fact that I'm not caught up on Fables, right? I have gotten through the one where Jack leaves.)

  3. I didn't realize this was out already; my library needs to get on the ball and order it!

I will actually be not at all sorry to see less from Jack Horner and more from the rest of them, although I'm right there with you... Babe's far and away my favorite too!
