Having met the challenge of a posthumous collaboration with the great Robert Jordan to complete his classic, bestselling fantasy series The Wheel of Time® with three #1 New York Times bestsellers in a row, Brandon Sanderson is at last free to return to the decade-spanning task of creating his own multi-volume epic, one that he hopes will make a comparable mark on the field. That epic is The Stormlight Archive and it began in 2010 with Tor’s longest, most elaborately embellished novel ever, The Way of Kings.~~~Cress by Marissa Meyer~~
In that first volume, we were introduced to the remarkable world of Roshar, a world both alien and magical, where gigantic hurricane-like storms scour the surface every few days and life has adapted accordingly. Roshar is shared by humans and the enigmatic, humanoid Parshendi, with whom they are at war. Among those caught up in the conflict are Brightlord Dalinar Kholin, who leads the human armies; his sister Jasnah, a renowned scholar; her student Shallan, a brilliant but troubled young woman; and Kaladin, a military slave who, by the book’s end, had become the first magically endowed Knight Radiant in centuries.
In Words of Radiance their intertwined stories will continue and, as Sanderson fans have come to expect, develop in unexpected, wonderfully surprising directions. The war with the Parshendi will move into a new, dangerous phase, as Dalinar leads the human armies deep into the heart of the Shattered Plains in a bold attempt to finally end it. Shallan will come along, hoping to find the legendary, perhaps mythical, city of Urithuru, which Jasnah believes holds a secret vital to mankind’s survival on Roshar. The Parshendi take a dangerous step to strengthen themselves for the human challenge, risking the return of the fearsome Voidbringers of old. To deal with it all, Kaladin must learn to how to fulfill his new role as leader of the restored Knights Radiant, while mastering the powers of a Windrunner.
With this second book, the Stormlight Archive grows even more richly immersive and compelling. Sanderson’s fans, old and new, are likely to lift it at least as high on the bestseller lists as its predecessor.

From the author of New York Times bestseller Garden Spells comes a beautiful, haunting story of old loves and new, and the power of the connections that bind us forever…~~The Unwritten - Volume 8: Orpheus in the Underworlds by Mike Carey~~
The first time Eby Pim saw Lost Lake, it was on a picture postcard. Just an old photo and a few words on a small square of heavy stock, but when she saw it, she knew she was seeing her future.
That was half a life ago. Now Lost Lake is about to slip into Eby’s past. Her husband George is long passed. Most of her demanding extended family are gone. All that’s left is a once-charming collection of lakeside cabins succumbing to the Southern Georgia heat and damp, and an assortment of faithful misfits drawn back to Lost Lake year after year by their own unspoken dreams and desires.
It’s a lot, but not enough to keep Eby from relinquishing Lost Lake to a developer with cash in hand, and calling this her final summer at the lake. Until one last chance at family knocks on her door.
Lost Lake is where Kate Pheris spent her last best summer at the age of twelve, before she learned of loneliness, and heartbreak, and loss. Now she’s all too familiar with those things, but she knows about hope too, thanks to her resilient daughter Devin, and her own willingness to start moving forward. Perhaps at Lost Lake her little girl can cling to her own childhood for just a little longer… and maybe Kate herself can rediscover something that slipped through her fingers so long ago.
One after another, people find their way to Lost Lake, looking for something that they weren’t sure they needed in the first place: love, closure, a second chance, peace, a mystery solved, a heart mended. Can they find what they need before it’s too late?
At once atmospheric and enchanting, Lost Lake shows Sarah Addison Allen at her finest, illuminating the secret longings and the everyday magic that wait to be discovered in the unlikeliest of places.

I have to wait until August for Libba Bray's new book to come out? That disappoints me. And I was wondering when Brandon Sanderson was going to write book two in his series, I've got book one on my nook, but haven't read it yet.
ReplyDeleteMy blog is readingtravels.wordpress.com if you'd like to come visit!
You are going to have some good reads to look forward to in 2014. enjoy
ReplyDeleteI'm excited for 2014 already just looking at your list of pre-orders! I also love putting in pre-orders for books. I tend to forget them just like you and love the little surprises that turn up. :) I don't think I am waiting for anything at the moment, so I might just join you in putting in some orders.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for the new Brandon Sanderson. How was Libba Bray's "The Diviners"? I have a copy sitting on my shelf that I haven't read yet.
ReplyDeleteNow we have to wish for time to read! Great list of books!
ReplyDeleteI think the new Sanderson may be the one I'm most excited about next year. Can't wait to lead a group read on that one.
ReplyDeleteAmong all the books I'm reading, one is the first Briggs book and I'm enjoying it. Hope to get into these as I'm a big fan of Dan Dos Santos' covers and I'd like a good excuse to be buying them.
Looking forward to Scalzi's new book, Lock In, and of course the new Alan Bradley. There is a new Alex Bledsoe Eddie LaCrosse book coming out that will be fun (although I'm two behind) and also the Star Wars book Honor Among Thieves that is a James S.A. Corey book I cannot wait to read (not to mention the new Expanse novel).
I have no doubt there will be many other ones I am not currently aware of but will end up snagging next year...that is always the nature of things, isn't it?
Well, it certainly looks like you've got lots of good books coming your way next year! I couldn't even say what I'm excited for next year, because I never know what's coming out except through posts like yours. :P
