Week in Review - Week 2

Random Thoughts

2016 is starting out slow, but steady. Here is hoping it stays that way! I didn't really set any major goals... Just read everyday, blog more, and try and get back into photography. I am also doing a huge book purge with the goal that all my books fit on my bookcases without having to double-up. This worked out to getting rid of 3 bookcases worth of books and then all the books that were piled and not shelved. I got rid of a lot of books, but still not entirely to my goal. I am hoping to reorganize my shelves and get rid of more books as the year carries on.

Graphic Novel Year

My graphic novel goal is to read all the comics I own once. This could mean for the first time in a few cases, but it is mostly a reread. I got side-tracked from my owned books and wound up getting Volume 3 and 4 of the Jessica Jones: Alias series, though, because I read Volume 1 and 2 at the end of 2015 and this will mean I am caught up in the series... Still graphic novels!

So, this week I read:
Star Wars: Princess Leia (Marvel Unlimited)
Jessica Jones: Alias - Volume 3 (E-Book)
Jessica Jones: Alias - Volume 4 (E-Book)
The Fade Out - Volume 1 (E-Book)

Weekly Reading

I really enjoyed this comic where Princess Leia takes the stage. One thing that Star Wars lacked was strong female characters. This comic included many and the franchise as a whole seems to be not as male-centric as it was when the original series came out. Strongly recommended!

Memory, and a lot of other people, seemed to really like this book. I did, too! I love the 1920s and fairy tale retellings. This book gives us both. And, what a great way to retell 'The Twelve Dancing Princesses'. I have read a few retellings of this classic and this is the first that couldn't be shelved in the fantasy section. Strongly recommended!

I watched the show, so naturally I wanted to read the comics. For some reason the first volume in paperback was ridiculously over-priced, so I decided to read the series as e-books. I like the show and I like the comics, but other than some similarities... It is really two different stories. I kind of wish the show had kept Carol Danvers as one of Jessica's closest friends, though. Recommended!

Well, for those of you that have watched the show, most of it seems to come from this volume. There were a lot of changes still, but the same basic ideas are present. I like Jessica in the comics, but I like her better in the show. And, this means I am actually caught up in a series... That rarely happens! Recommended!

I read the first issue of this and liked it, but then didn't get a chance to get the volumes. I saw it on a few best of lists, though, and there was a sale on the first two volumes. So, I had to check it out. And, I have to admit I liked it more than I expected to when I read the first issue. It takes place at the end of the Golden Era with art that I really enjoyed. I look forward to reading more in the series! Recommended!

  1. I have The Girls at the Kingfisher Club on my TBR but had kind of forgotten about it with all the newer shinier books. I need to reserve a copy at the library. Your book project sounds massive! Good luck getting through everything and getting it all organized. I love organizing bookshelves but the clearing out part isn't as much fun. Have a great week! I love the pictures of Mackie!

  2. Aw, The Girls at the Kingfisher Club was so good. I really liked it a lot, and it made me excited (I already was! but more excited!) for whatever Genevieve Valentine plans on doing next.

  3. Good luck with fitting your books all on your shelves! I think having an e-reader has saved my shelves from overflowing since my last purge. We actually have room to fit some of my daughter's books on our shelves in the library/living room downstairs. Mouse is so excited. I have been hearing good things about The Girls at the Kingfisher Club. Mackie is such a beautiful dog! Having my mom's dog here with us for a couple of weeks was so nice. I miss having one. Not sure I could talk my husband into adopting another dog right now though.

    Have a great week!

  4. It looks like you are having a great start to your reading year! I need to do a book purge as well but it is a daunting process. So I keep putting it off :) Have a great week!

  5. I love the Jessica Jones show but I'm undecided about whether I'll read the books. My library doesn't have much of a comics collection and I'm trying to limit my comics spending.

  6. What a cute pup! Good luck with the purging... I've had to do a bit of book purging too but my books are still double-stacked so I'm impressed with your goal!
