Week in Review - Week 32 (?)

Life

Hi everyone! Can you believe I haven't blogged since April 4th? After blogging at least once a week all last year, I am disappointed that I couldn't remotely keep it up this year. But, that is me. I ebb and flow with my interests. And, sometimes I just have too many and things start falling by the wayside. This year has not been a great reading year either. I think I may have finished two books since my last post. That is a pretty extensive reading slump even for me. It also means that what started out as a great year for audios has turned back into a typical one. I am not sure what is up with 2017...

Last time I updated I mentioned that I had started couponing. I am still doing that, but even that has taken a back burner this last month. There is only two of us and we only have so much room. I am hoping to get into a bit more this month and into the fall. It is really fun, but it is hard when you have so few store options in your immediate area and do not have a store that price matches. I never thought I would be disappointed to not live near a Walmart... You need to stay consistent with it to see a difference in your budget, so I must get back on track.

What else have I been doing... I put the puzzles away until the winter. I have been watching TV a lot more than I normally do. I am in the midst of a huge watch of ER and just finished the 11th season. That is very unusual for me. That random project kind of paused the Disney project, but hoping to get back to that when I finish off this show. I think I will need a break! Otherwise, it is just life stuff. I haven't even been taking that many pictures.

Weekly 4 Month Reading

Dark Ambition: The Shocking Crime of Dellen Millard & Mark Smich ~ My friend lent this to me and I have to admit that I am not even sure if I heard about this case and murder. I live under a rock, people! But, she gave it to me so I decided to see what it was all about. All I can say is you still are left with unanswered questions that will probably never be answered and the whole case is appalling. Murdered over a truck... I don't understand the mentality that would lead people to do that...

Mercy Thompson Series - Book 9: Fire Touched - I then decided to check back in with Mercy Thompson. I love this series and used to be caught up in it... Now I am one book closer to being caught back up and hopefully will get to book 10 in this century. Maybe even this year! It was another fun adventure. I always enjoy checking in with Mercy and her world.

Week in Review - Week 13 &14

Life

Well, it was bound to happen. I am not really reading that much, so now blogging is losing its allure. After blogging at least once a week for over a year, I missed a week. I am sad about it, but I just don't really know what to talk about when I am in a slump. It is not getting better either, folks. It is April 4th and I have not read anything or listened to any audio so far this month. I have no idea what is wrong with me this year.

What have I been doing lately? I started couponing. It is not like it is in the US in Canada, but we can still do it. I am on week two and I have got free shampoo, soup, and cat food. I have also received really great savings on other things. We came out of the grocery store the other night with like 4 bags that cost me under 20 dollars. I was pretty proud of myself. I am still learning, though. I am not sure I will ever be an Extreme Couponer, but any savings are better than none!

I started a second job. I am not sure if I will be continuing it, though. I like it, but it is very time consuming, and I haven't quite figured out how to fit it in around my regular job and everything else happening in my house. When I got paid for it on Monday, though, I was very happy to have extra money in my account. So, I will have to make it work.

I have been continuing watching Disney movies. Since my last post I watched Lady and the Tramp, The Apple Dumpling Gang, Pocahontas, Alice in Wonderland (2010), Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, Cinderella (2015), The Good Dinosaur, Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016), and I think that is it... Part of my issue is finding all of the movies that I want to watch.

I am also still making puzzles, but not as fast as I was...

American Street - I really liked this audio. The narrator did a great job and the story was compelling, too. It is too bad that this is the last audio I have finished recently, but at least I left off on a good note. If you haven't checked this out, I do recommend it!

Ghosts - I read Drama earlier this year and had fun with it. This one was at the second hand store when I went in last week, so I grabbed it and actually managed to read it in a timely manner. I like how the author touches on serious matters in almost a lighthearted way. I actually had two friends growing up that had cystic fibrosis and they both passed away before graduating high school. So, I could relate to a certain point to the experiences in this book.

Life

Remember how I tend to be a bit of project undertaker? I haven't really had one in a while, so I started one this last week. I have been mentioning all my movie watching lately, right? Well, I am doing a movie project. Disney movies! I printed off a list of all of them ever made and that will be my movie watching over the next while. I am going to start with ones I have never seen before and then move on. We will see how far I make it in this project. I am not a big movie watcher typically, so this could end up fizzling, but it has been fun so far! As I write this I am watching the new Alice Through the Looking Glass and regretting that I didn't rewatch Alice in Wonderland first because I hardly remember it. I think I will have to rethink my plans a bit.

I am still not reading very much. It makes me kind of sad that I can't seem to settle in with anything lately, but at least I have found other things to do in the meantime.

Disney Movies Watched

This list will be a bit long to catch up on what I have watched so far this year...

Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Brave
Wreck-It Ralph
Monsters University
Maleficent
Big Hero 6
Inside Out
Zootopia
Finding Dory
The BFG
Queen of Katwe
Moana

Dreams of Gods & Monsters (audio) ~ Look, I finished a trilogy! I really enjoy the narrator of this trilogy, but I do not think I liked this book as much as I could have. It is why my audio listening slowed down after being off to such a great start this month. I did like it, but not as much as I wanted to and enough to keep me wanting to pick it up. I probably should have set it aside, but I wanted to finish a trilogy.

All-New Wolverine - Volume 1: The Four Sisters ~ Even with my comic reading, it is all over the place. I have a couple series started on Marvel Unlimited and keep starting new ones. I am enjoying how there are more and more comics centred around women. I especially like how this new run of Wolverine wears real clothes and doesn't feel the need to wear the gravity defying outfits that other superheroes tend to wear. She can just be kick ass and awesome all on her own. I enjoyed this first volume and look forward to her future adventures. Recommended!

Week in Review - Week 11

Life

Another quiet reading week. I am not even sure what I am doing other than reading, but I didn't even finish my audio this week. Hoping this week gets better. I didn't even get my blog post up on time.

What I have done is watch a lot of movies. I watched The Secret Life of Pets. That was a cute movie. Another one I watched was Zootopia. I really liked that one. One I didn't like was Trolls. It was a bit boring for me. Storks was cute. I finally saw Finding Dory. I had fun with it. I saw Inside Out, too. It wasn't too bad. As you can see, it was still kid movies. lol I think I just needed some short and sweet stuff that didn't make me think too much. There were others, but that mood seems to be passing. Now if the reading would just get better!

I got auto-approved for this from Netgalley, so I decided to check it out. I enjoyed Wein in the past. I am liking it, but anyone's guess if I will even finish it! This reading slump is the pits.

Audiobook

I tried to read this last year and couldn't get into it. I though that the audio would go better, but I am not sure if it is me or the book that has this carrying into another week. I have been almost done for days now. Going to have to find something awesome to follow it up with because I don't want an audio slump.

Weekly Reading

Understanding Color in Photography ~ When I was on Netgalley checking out the Elizabeth Wein book, this book caught my eye. I own everyone of his books, so I had to at least try and see if I was approved for this one. And, I was! It was informative and I have the paperback edition in my cart for when it is released in August, but at the same time I am not positive I need to own a copy. The issue I had with this book was the terrible formatting and I know that is an e-galley thing, but there were times where I wasn't sure if I was reading captions or the rest of the sentence. Then I would be like, where is the rest of this sentence. I learned a lot about colour and really wish I actually kept up my camera learning. There is just not enough hours in my day. I do recommend this and all of Bryan Peterson's books, though!

Wayward - Volume 4: Threads and Portents ~ Yay! This is one of my favourite graphic novel series and I was so excited for a new volume. I had planned to reread the first 3 volumes, but with my reading slump, I decided I should just be happy if I manage to get through this one for now. That means that there were a few details it took me a bit to remember, but I still overall really enjoyed this volume and am excited to see how the events of it play out in Volume 5. Recommended!

Week in Review - Week 10

Life

I finished 4 books this week and 3 of them were audios. I am not sure if that has ever happened before. My average audiobook listening each month is only usually 5 and I just listened to 3 in a week. I am curious what that will mean for the reading month overall. I could have an awesome audio month, or fizzle on them. It would be nice to actually being reading with my eyes, too, but it is better than nothing. I just keep starting stuff, reading a bit, and then putting it down and picking something else up. I just cannot seem to concentrate. At least with audios I can do other things while listening to them.

I am pretty sure it is clear to most people that read my blog that I am not a big television/movie watcher. Which is why it was so strange for me to sit down last night and watch two movies! What were they? Moana and Sing. I am so cool. lol When I decided on a movie night, I had the house to myself. When the guy got home I had just turned Moana on, so he got to enjoy them, too. He was not eager to watch either of them, but in the end he enjoyed Moana. I don't think he liked Sing. To be honest, I thought Moana was better than Sing

Maybe? I am a bit into it, so hopefully it will stick.

Audiobook

I read the first book in this series by audio, but then I read the second book. I really like the narrator and when I tried to move on to this book last year, it just didn't click at the time. So, I got it on audio and now I can finish a trilogy! I am enjoying it.

Weekly Reading

The Invisible Library ~ Finally! I started this book when it first came out, but it was right when I broke my ankle and I just never got back to it. I have heard really good things about the series and the audio was in the recent Audible sale, so I grabbed a copy. I am so glad I finally did! I liked it enough that if I could have figured out how to use credits on the Audible app, I would have started the next one right away. But, I couldn't, so I read something I owned all ready instead. Anyway, this was a fun mystery-type novel that is centred around books and libraries. I definitely want to see what happens next. Recommended!

A Man Called Ove ~ This book was a daily deal last year sometime and I didn't think it sounded like a book that I would like. But, then, it was kind of everywhere and I regretted that I hadn't grabbed a copy when it was on sale. Thankfully, it went on sale again and I grabbed a copy that time around. I had no plans to read it when I did, but it was just there and it cleared a book of the ole TBR. (My audio one anyway.) And, despite it not really being a 'me' book, I did actually enjoy it. Ove was a great character and you really got to know him and all the people that he crossed paths with. I also enjoyed the cat. I am glad I got and read this one. Recommended!

Setting Free the Kites ~  So, if you are going to read one book that is a bit out of your normal zone, why not two? This book is getting a lot of buzz from people that I trust and I had an audible credit. So, I grabbed a copy and settled in. I am not even sure if I can tell you why, but I loved this book. I am not typically a fan of books narrated by young protagonists, they tend to annoy me, but this one was believable and human and I just really loved it. I think the moment I knew I was going to was when the title actually comes up in the book. There was something about that which just kind of called to me. And then it was all just wonderful after that. Someone asked me why I enjoyed the book so much and I just really cannot put it into words, but this book is definitely worth the hype! It will be on my best of 2017 list for sure. Strongly recommended!

Revival ~ The only book I read this week that was not an audio was this one. I have been curious about this series for a while and was happy when it was in the Image Humble Bundle I bought last month. I enjoyed it and would probably read on, but at the same time it is not something that I have to read on in. Hopefully more in the series will be in some future sales so I can see how things play out. Recommended!

February in Review (2017)

Looking Back

February was an interesting month. It seemed like after a mild winter, winter arrived. But then it went away again and the temperatures got mild again. As I write this, most of the snow is gone and there is none in the forecast. It has been a weird winter! Normally February is my least favourite month of the year because while it is the shortest, it is usually the worst weather wise. This year it was just a continuation of January in that I cannot seem to get my head in the game and on track for things. It got better as the month ended so hopefully March will be more on track!

One big change to start out this year as opposed to last year is that I was not really listening to audios for the first part of 2016. I have been curious how reading them all year will affect my reading overall. What has happened is my 'regular' reading has slowed down and without audios I would hardly be reading anything. Interesting how that works out! And, I slowed down on audios even in February, but seem to be back on track now. I am getting better and better at working audios into other things that I do normally. When I first started I only listened to them on the treadmill.

Otherwise, Chloe continues to grow and have adventures. Mackie got to play with his 'uncle' Henry a bunch. Finn continues to ignore me unless he wants something. The usual. I try not to, but I still hope to open the door and find Casey waiting for me to let her in. I am not sure if I will ever entirely get over her loss. I hate not knowing what happened to her and it just makes me feel guilty. I actually have never lost an animal and not known what happened to them before, so I think that is a lot of it. And the fact that she was never supposed to be an outdoor cat, but wanted to be one so badly. This whole scenario is why I never wanted her to be an outdoor cat.

I never meant this to turn so uncheerful. Let's move on!

Week in Review - Week 9

Life

Compared to last year, I didn't really have that many books preordered. But, with this reading slump, any is too many. So, yesterday I cancelled like half of them. Maybe more than half. If I am lucky, some of them will be Kindle or Audio deals in the future. But, there is just no point to buy books if I can't seem to read the ones I own all ready. I know that part of me will regret it as the reviews of said books trickle out, but I have Amazon Prime. I don't even really need to order too far ahead anymore.

Audiobooks were doing really well in January, but I kind of fizzled on them in February. I seem to be getting back into them again now, so hopefully that continues. And, it is not like I am not reading at all, it is just that I seem to only be reading shorter works. So, while it could be worse, I keep hoping to get back in a groove because I have a lot of longer books that I really want to read and haven't yet. Maybe March will kick start the reading longer works!

We have had some adventures around here. Chloe has fallen in the toilet several times. Yesterday it happened again and it was not a clean toilet... Then she closed the door to the fireplace on herself. I think she probably could get have got out, but she was confused as to how. I bought a puzzle at Value Village of a cat dangling from curtains. That is how my house seems with this cat. But, Mackie really likes her. When I say it is bedtime, they both follow me upstairs and usually sleep really close to each other. I also doubt she learned any lesson from yesterday's experience and will do it again.

Currently Reading

I say that I am reading this, but I am only like 50 pages in. I am never the best at actually finishing trilogies/series in the first place, but add in some slow reading lately and it could be a while. Hoping to dedicate some time to this book today.

I didn't get a chance to start this yesterday, but it is hopefully what I plan to listen to next!

Weekly Reading

Kindred Spirits ~ I have read all of Rainbow Rowell's books but Landline, so in an attempt to read the last couple things I had to read by her I picked this book up earlier in the week. I thought it was really great. A nice little story about some Star Wars fans that end up hanging out in the line to see the new Star Wars movie and strike up an unusual friendship. It is a bit different than Rowell's normal writing, but it still manages to insert some of her ideals about people and how they should be treated. It also speaks to the 'nerd' culture. Strongly Recommended!

X-Factor - Volume 1: The Longest Night ~ I read The All-New X-Factor, but this is the first time I have gone back and read the older stuff. I imagine this will be my project for the next bit. It is about a band of basically misfit Mutants who have a detective agency and are trying to help out other Mutants. I enjoy the cast and the way they play off each other. Recommended!

False Hearts ~ I thought this was standalone, but turns out it is not! In any case, I had this preordered last year, but cancelled it for whatever reason. After really enjoying the narrator in another audio I read this year, I decided to grab this one on audio. I am very happy that I did. I have enjoyed Laura Lam in the past, but then she sort of got quiet on the writing for a while there. I am happy to see she is publishing again and that she continues to write well. This is the story of conjoined twins that were raised in a cult of sorts, but near death leads them to having to leave so they can survive. Not having experienced world outside, it is a learning experience for them. And, it is a society where conjoined twins would have been corrected at birth. So, they are separated and this is the story of their separate lives after one of the twins gets herself into some trouble. Strongly Recommended!

A Monster Calls ~ I keep eyeing the movie, but I am not sure if I want to watch it. What I did want to do is finally reread it and it was an Audio Deal a while ago. I am not sure that I would read the book for the first time by audio because the book itself is just amazing, but it was a good reread via audio. I actually dug my copy of the book off my bookshelves and flipped through it while I listened. This book will get you right in the feels. Recommended!

Week in Review - Week 8

Life

Nothing too exciting happened over the last week, we just got winter happening and lots of snow as a result. There are no storms in the forecast for a while, so this has been a weird winter. Mild with a few cold days, hardly any snow, and then a few storms in a row. Now back to mild with a few cold days. We didn't get as much snow as other parts of the province, but it was enough for me. The dog has fun in it at least.

My reading mojo is slowly coming back. I started sorting through my e-reader for novellas and that seems to be where my mind is at the moment. I also listened to a wonderful audio that got my audio listening back on track. Hopefully March will be a great reading month after a rocky start to the year. I just want to read all the books that I have got in the last couple months and neglected because I can't seem to settle with them.

Currently Reading

I started this last night, so only really read the introduction so far. I have heard a lot about Silnit and figured it was about time I checked her out.

Audiobook

I really have enjoyed Laura Lam in the past and January LaVoy is a wonderful narrator. Hopefully this will be a good listen!

Weekly Reading

The Princess Diarist ~ I have really enjoyed Carrie Fisher's other two memoirs, so I knew I was going to have to grab a copy of this one. I enjoyed it! It was a lot sadder to read knowing that the author of it was no longer with us, but it was still her fun writing from her previous two memoirs. I may not always agree with how she thinks and chooses to live, but that doesn't mean that I am not always curious about her. And, it was fun to read about Star Wars. I think there were more books in her and I am sad we won't get more. Recommended!

Miniatures: The Very Short Fiction of John Scalzi ~ I love John Scalzi, so when I saw this released last year I knew I was going to have to eventually check it out. I am not a huge short story reader, but when they are done well, I will be in love. And, these were done well. Plus, the whole point is that they are very short stories. They span his career and a few are never before published. It is fun to visit the inside of his mind and the weird ideas he comes up with. Strongly recommended!

Passing Strange ~ When the lists of upcoming books popped up late last year, this was one that caught my eye. And, it was a novella so it didn't put a pounding on the pocket book to take a chance on it. While it is marketed as fantasy, and definitely is a fantasy novel, the fantasy aspects are quiet and take a back burner to the overall story of the characters. A very character-driven book is really what it is. And, I really liked it. I had never heard of the author before, so I am glad I took a chance on it. Definitely worth checking out! Strongly recommended!

Binti ~ I heard a lot of buzz about this last year, so I grabbed a copy. I am glad this novella reading spree brought me to this one because it is definitely really good. A science fiction novel about a young girl from a strange planet who finds herself in the middle of a war. It contains a strong female lead who definitely comes into her own in this short book. I am really looking forward to the fact that there are sequels and we can keep seeing her move forward. Strongly recommended!

Lincoln in the Bardo (audio) ~ I happened to see this one pop up on Audible and state that it had 166 narrators. I was intrigued. I have started to see the buzz about it, but I guess I missed it originally. So, I grabbed a copy and what a different type of experience this book is! It is narrated by some very famous people and all the different voices bring the story to life. Centred around Abraham Lincoln and his son, Willie, and mostly taking place in a graveyard. It sounds weird, but it works. I strongly recommend it and this will likely be on my best of 2017 list!

Week in Review - Week 7

Life

February is always my least favourite month of the year. This year seems to be no exception. I can't even tell you what I have been doing instead of my normal activities, but it has been a quiet month so far. I have no real interest in reading, my audiobook listening has slowed down, I am not blogging, and I am not blog hopping. It's weird. Hopefully I can get out of this overall slump soon. The fact that after a pretty mild winter we are getting storm after storm is not helping. Plus, it has been colder than it was. The storm that is supposed to hit tonight could mean snow until Tuesday. I am not excited.

We have been watching stuff, though. We are all caught up on NCIS, my favourite show, and we watched The Girl with all the Gifts the other night. The book was way better, but the movie wasn't terrible. I continue with my puzzle making. Sometimes I make a whole puzzle with all the pieces. Other times pieces are missing. I got rid of some puzzles last week and found a piece to one of them after the fact. Thankfully she has only got to my second hand puzzles, so it is not devastating to finish and be missing a piece like it would be if it was a new one. They are probably missing pieces to begin with as they did come from other homes.

Weekly Reading

Tank Girl: Two Girls One Tank ~ A picture from this comic went viral following the events in the U.S. and I decided that I had to check it out. It is not your typical comicbook about women. This is more what a male characters adventures would be like. I really enjoyed it! It wasn't perfect, but it really set women in different roles than the normal. I am excited to see where the series goes from here and might check out the earlier runs at some point. Recommended!

Paper Girls - Volume 2 ~ Brian K Vaughan is one of my favourite graphic novel authors. I read all of Y: The Last Man in December to remind myself how much I enjoy him. I really enjoyed the first volume in this series, so knew I was going to have to get the second one when it came out. I am not sure why it took me so long to actually read it! He continues to hit things out of the park with this one and I can't wait for Volume 3! Strongly recommended!

Marked in Flesh (The Others, Book 4) ~ And just like that, I am actually all caught up in this series until Volume 5 comes out in March. I am very impressed with myself! I think I should have done it a little differently, because this one took me a bit longer to get through than the others. I start to want to read other things, but was determined to not walk away from this series. And, it is really fun paranormal series. It is not the best series I have ever read necessarily, but it was the perfect mindless fun for this drab time of year. I plan to get book 5 in March and see what happens next. I did this on audio and the narrator does a great job all of the books. Recommended!

January was an interesting month. I was in a rut that I could not seem to break out of for the entire month. I tried to get back into things that I had neglected. One thing was Postcrossing. I discovered why I had been neglecting Postcrossing when 5 International stamps cost me almost 15 dollars. So, I plan to keep it up, but very minimal. I plan to send what I can this Friday because I will be able to get to the post office. In the past I failed at keeping it up because I would do the postcards up, but then never make it to the post office. I still have not received anything in return, but hopefully they will start trickling in soon!

Otherwise, I read a bit. Not nearly as much as I normally do in January and mostly audios and graphic novels. I was not listening to audios at all in January of 2016, so it is interesting how reading changes. I am not sure what was wrong with me, but reading was very sporadic. I am hoping this doesn't set the tone for the entire year because there were a lot of books that I really wanted to get to this year that I didn't get to last year.

The world was kind of crazy in January, too. That definitely didn't help things. I am still hoping that Casey is staying in someone's house and they will let her out soon, but I know that is becoming less and less realistic as time passes. Chloe is a great cat, though, and definitely keeps life interesting. Mackie continues to be himself and gets along really well with Chloe. I enjoy catching them in positions that I have pictures of Casey and Mackie in the same ones. And, Finn is just Finn. Not a very friendly cat most of the time, but he hovers.

Week in Review - Week 6

Life

Well, it was bound to happen. After posting every Sunday for over a year, I missed a Sunday. Life happened, but I am still a bit sad about it. It was one of the few constant things I was keeping going... I am not even sure what is wrong with me. I don't live in the U.S., we are having a pretty mild winter, and everything else is pretty consistent. But, I am not really reading, blogging, or anything else that I do consistently.

But, the week was not all bad. I went out on a girl's night last Monday, which is not something I normally do, and we went to a dinner and a movie. The movie was Split. I would not have picked it and it was super weird, but it was not terrible. It was a fun night! Next time we are going to see Beauty and the Beast which is a bit of a change. lol I am really excited about that movie personally. It was always my favourite Disney movie.

I am hoping whatever this mood I seem to be in will pass soon!

I tried this on audio and it didn't click. Reading it is going much better!

Audiobook

Okay, I guess I am still reading the same audio as last week. Oops!

Weekly Reading

Morning Glories - Volume 10 ~ Well, after waiting for this over like a year, it finally arrived and I was so excited to check it out. This was such a weird volume. The whole series is super weird, though! Now I hope it will not be a year for Volume 11.

Black Science - Volume 1 ~ Okay, I really really wanted to try this series. In the end, I was bored. I have no plans to read on and I am sad it didn't click with me.

Shrill ~ Omg, this woman is fabulous and if you have not read this yet, you should! She talks about life in such a readable way. And, she gets into it. I really loved this collection!

Mirror: The Mountain ~ I really liked the idea of this one, but again it was disappointing. I just didn't click with it at all. Sad!

Mockingbird - Volume 1 ~ I wanted to read this because apparently people treated the author terribly. So, instead of waiting for the whole arc to come on Marvel Unlimited, I bought a copy to support her. It was great and I am very disappointed that it is yet another series in the Marvel world that I was really enjoying, but they are not continuing. Strongly recommended!

New Additions

Mockingbird - Volume 1: I Can Explain
Tank Girl - Two Girls One Tank - Collection 1
